The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro at a glance

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro is the replacement for the Redmi Note 7 and the successor to the illustrious Redmi Note 5 which caused so much ink to flow when it arrived in Europe. Introduced at the end of August 2019 in China, it is still based on an unfailing quality/price ratio even if the price is slightly higher, the Redmi Note 8 Pro offers a lot for a price that remains under 300 euros even in its most advanced version.

6.3-inch Full HD+ Screen

From the back, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 Pro is very different from its predecessor. Like other models of the Redmi brand, including the Mi 9T (called Redmi K20 in China) and its variations, the main photo block of the phonograph is not placed in the corner of the phone, but in the center of the hull. Positioned vertically, it is located above the fingerprint reader. The back is 3D curved on all 4 sides.

At the front, the Redmi Note 8 Pro features a large slab with a drop-shaped notch. The nature of this screen is IPS. It measures 6.53 inches (previously 6.3 inches) in 19.5/9e format (unchanged). Its definition remains Full HD+. Its resolution therefore drops very slightly, from 409 pixels per inch to 395 pixels per inch. HDR compatible, the display of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is protected by Corning’s Gorilla 5 mineral glass.

MediaTek Helio G90T with 6 GB RAM

The Xiaomi smartphone is powered by a chipset from the Taiwanese foundry MediaTek. It is the Helio G90T that its designer presents as a processor calibrated to play on mobile phones and which makes its first appearance in France. This octo-core, which is similar in performance to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730, consists of two Cortex-A76 cores clocked up to 2.05 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to 2 GHz. It integrates an ARM Mali-G76 MC4 GPU. It replaces the Snapdragon 660.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is available in France in two versions. They both have 6 GB of RAM (Random Access Memory). One has 64GB of storage, while the other has double that. Count about 30 euros to go from one to the other. Also note that the internal storage space is expandable with a microSDXC memory card (up to an additional 512GB). It installs on the second SIM card port.

Quad photo sensor 48+8+2+2 megapixels

On the photo side, the Redmi Note 8 Pro benefits from much improved equipment compared to its predecessor. Instead of the two sensors of the Redmi Note 7 there are now four different sensors, always accompanied by a flash. The main sensor is a 64 megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1.

Like the Sony IMX586 (used for the Redmi Note 7), it operates in “Quad Pixel” mode, combining information from four adjacent pixels to create brighter 16 megapixel images. It comes with an f/1.9 aperture lens and phase-detecting autofocus.

The second sensor is an 8-megapixel model placed behind a wide-angle lens opening at f/2.2. The third sensor is a 2 megapixel model dedicated to proximity photography. It is positioned behind a lens opening at f/2.4. The last sensor, with a resolution of up to 2 megapixels, is used to calculate depths for portrait mode.

The assembly is supported by a dual LED flash and a laser autofocus which is only used for the main sensor.

At the front the front camera of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is a 20 megapixel model with f/2.0 lens. It is HDR compatible. Customizable AI Beautify function for your photos and videos. The smartphone shoots in 4K at 30 frames per second and rises to 960 frames per second in 720p in slow motion.

Battery 4500 mAh with quick recharge

Like its predecessors, the Redmi Note 8 Pro offers a very generous drum kit. It is even more so as its capacity increases from 4000 mAh to 4500 mAh. It is fast charge compatible and accepts chargers up to 18 watts (built-in 18 W fast charger), such as the Redmi Note 7.

The Xiaomi smartphone is powered by Android 9.0 Pie as the basis for MIUI 10. Other technical features of the Redmi Note 8 Pro include a LTE modem, WiFi ac dual band and Bluetooth 5.0, a GPS sensor (Beidou, Galileo and Glonass), two nano SIM slots (the second of which is hybrid), a 3.5 mm jack port (with FM tuner), and a USB type-C port, not forgetting the fingerprint reader on the back.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro is available in four colors : Green Forest, White Pearl and Grey Mineral.
