The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 in brief
Presentation
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is the fourth premium borderless smartphone of the Chinese brand Presented in October 2018, it succeeds the Mi MIX 2S, made official a few months earlier. The Mi MIX 3 takes up the concept of its predecessors, namely a smartphone that tends towards the total elimination of borders. If the Mi MIX 2S was a technical update of the Mi MIX2, the Mi MIX 3 takes the technical specifications of its predecessor and changes the ergonomics considerably.
6.39-inch FHD+ screen
The design is obviously the most obvious change between the Mi MIX 3 and the Mi MIX 2S. The relatively thick border, which housed the technical elements including the webcam and previously highlighted the screen, disappears, leaving only the screen and, hidden in the thin border, the telephone earpiece. The webcam, or rather double webcam here, is hidden in the thickness of the phone thanks to a slider-type frame like the Honor Magic 2.
The full screen slider is fully customizable. Users can activate it to answer calls or modify it to launch different functions. There is also a special “gaming” feature with the slider, allowing users to make screenshots, screen recordings or hide notifications during game sessions.
With no thick borders, the screen gets even bigger. This is a 6.39-inch slab, which is 0.4 inch larger than the Mi MIX 2S screen. Its definition is Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) for an unchanged resolution of 403 pixels per inch. The backlighting is Super AMOLED. It is HDR compatible. The mineral glass that protects the set is from Corning’s Gorilla 5, as on the back. On the slices, the metal is 7000 aluminum.
For the first time, Xiaomi has added an artificial intelligence button on the left side of the phone: users can activate Google Assistant by holding down the AI button.
QualcommSnapdragon 845 Octo-Core Chipset
The smartphone is powered by the same chipset as in the Mi MIX 2S. This is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845. The high-end octo-core is clocked here at 2.8 GHz for its most powerful cores and 1.7 GHz for its most economical cores. The graphic part is provided by an Adreno 630 processor. The set is used to animate Xiaomi’s MIUI 10 custom ROM, running here on an Android 9.0 Pie base.
In its French version, the Mi MIX 3 is offered in a version equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. These are not expandable by microSDXC. This information is all the more important as this is the worst version of the Mi MIX 3 internationally. The smartphone is also available in versions with 8 or 10 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.
Dual 12+12 megapixel photo sensor with 2x zoom
On the photo side, the Mi MIX 3 takes the equipment of its predecessor at the rear. It is a 12+12 megapixel dual sensor with 2x optical zoom The first sensor is combined with f/1.8 optics, dual-pixel phase detection autofocus, optical stabilizer and LED flash. The secondary sensor is equipped with an f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens and standard autofocus.
Xiaomi has introduced a stable night photography mode, combining various software features. The smartphone also benefits from the 4-axis OIS system of the rear camera.
In video, this dual sensor shoots in 2160p at 60 frames per second and rises to 960 frames per second in 1080p.
At the front, the Mi MIX 3 takes advantage of its new sliding chassis to offer an unprecedented combination compared to its predecessors with a 24+2 megapixel dual webcam. The first sensor is associated with an f/2.8 aperture lens. In low-light conditions, the sensor uses Super Pixel technology which improves the clarity of the pictures. The second 2 Megapixel sensor focuses on the depth of the elements to create a nice bokeh effect. An LED flash accompanies them. The whole thing is filmed in 1080p.
3200 mAh battery with quick charge
The equipment of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 includes two SIM slots (two nano SIMs), a LTE category 18 modem, WiFi ac dual band and Bluetooth 5.0, a GPS sensor (Glonass, Galileo, QZSS and Beidou), an NFC sensor, a USB Type C port and a fingerprint reader positioned at the rear. There is no 3.5 mm jack port, nor FM tuner.
The battery capacity is 3200 mAh, 200 mAh less than the Mi MIX 2 and Mi MIX 2S. It is compatible with both Quick Charge (Quick Charge 4+) and wireless charging (Qi). The smartphone also comes with a 10W wireless charger.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is available in black, green and blue. This colour “Sapphire Blue” is directly inspired by Chinese ceramic craftsmanship.
