WWE SmackDown results, grades: Seth Rollins ruins big Cesaro moment

the world superstar Cesaro

SmackDown opened with a bang as WWE Champion Roman Reigns began his show surrounded by Jay Uso and Paul Heyman.

The WWE star made good on his promise at WrestleMania 37 when he defeated Edge and Daniel Bryan in the main event to regain the title.

Heyman agreed to perform for the tribal leader, who insisted that no one wanted his celebrity, and he fulfilled his contractual obligations by joining in to start the show.

But Cesaro – fresh off a big win over Seth Rollins in his first singles match at Mania – steps forward, only to have the trio disrespect him by immediately leaving the ring before he can speak.

Backstage, Swiss Cyborg confronted Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville and demanded the Main Event match with Roman – the latter said she would talk to the champion and see what he thinks of it.

Heyman was later seen talking to Kayla Braxton, berating Cesaro before insisting on giving him what he wanted – but it turned out to be a ruse when he revealed that he would indeed be facing Jay Aso at the end of the evening.

Cesaro – who was repeatedly featured throughout the evening with footage of his epic UFO on Rollins during Mania – responded briefly but kindly, promising to prove that he belongs in the ring with Roman.

Minutes before the main event, Jay Uso called his opponent a one-step wonder and seemed ready to deal with his cousin.

The Main Event itself was as great as you would expect. Both men made optimal use of the time available to them and gave a magnificent show.

Unfortunately, the ending – which came without Cesaro making a UFO, despite WWE touting the move all night – ruined things a bit.

Instead of the Swiss star focusing on Roman Reigns, it seems his issues with Rollins are still not resolved as the SmackDown savior attacked his opponent, leading to a disqualification as the show came to a close.

Kevin Owens defeats Sami Zayn in a WrestleMania rematch, Bayley warns Bianca Belair, and Apollo Crews presents Commander Azeez.

The first match of the evening – a special mention to new commentator Pat McAfee, for his work with Michael Cole throughout the show – was all about the tag division, as Otis and Rey Mysterio took on Chad Gable and Dominick at ringside for their respective partners.

The duo worked well in an unfortunately too short showdown. Ray won with a crucifix pin in a fight that could have gone on for another five minutes.

After losing to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania, he kept talking about collusion and insisted that Logan Paul’s distraction in the ring was the only reason he didn’t win.

He challenged Kevin Owens to a rematch, which was accepted – and there was no chance either of them would bring anything but high-level storytelling.

They had time to do it, and eventually Zayn lost again by countout, only for the Knockout to drag him back into the ring to strike, and for Stunner to make a statement to the locker room.

In a moment of joy, Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford of Arrival Street put on a championship for his wife Bianca Belair after a historic victory over Sasha Banks at WrestleMania.

Surprisingly, there was no break while the trio shared sweet moments with each other and EST called on WWE to let the duo recapture the SmackDown Tag Team Titles later in the evening.

Backstage, Sasha Banks looked furious and Bayley was talking to Kayla about taking out Belair while bringing in the new champion.

Plus: WWE

The battle for the title was hotly contested. Both teams won, but the Dirty Dawgs won to retain the gold.

In the women’s division at WrestleMania, Natalya took on Shayna Baszler in a very close match after she and Tamina became close on the second night of WrestleMania.

The crowd was fully behind the challenger that night, and Nia’s occasional distraction allowed Natalya to sneak in a win and secure a rematch while they were at it.

Elsewhere on the show, new Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews introduced his new bodyguard Commander Aziz to the world and dropped his Nigerian Nagel finisher (a Samoan Spike for Umaga fans).
