What should the Houston Texans do with the No. 3 pick in the NFL draft?

The Texans have the third pick in this year’s NFL draft and many are wondering what they should do with it. The team could choose one of a few options – trade down to acquire more picks or select a player on their board whom they feel gives them best shot at winning now.

The “do the texans have their first round pick 2022 ” is a question that has been asked by many people. The Houston Texans are expected to select someone with their first-round pick in this year’s draft, but what should they do with the No. 3 pick?

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Texans hold a first-round choice in the NFL draft for the first time since 2019. After dealing quarterback Deshaun Watson, a previous first-round selection, to the Cleveland Browns last month, they now have two (Nos. 3 and 13).

Nick Caserio, the team’s general manager, is in the midst of rebuilding the squad, and he now has the draft capital to do it. In this year’s draft, the Texans had 11 selections, five of which are in the top 80. Caserio only chose one player in the first 80 choices a year ago.

What are the possibilities for the Texans with the No. 3 selection next week?

Of course, how the Texans approach tackle Tytus Howard will be directly tied to how they regard him. Since being picked, the Texans have moved the 2019 first-round selection throughout the offensive line, with Caserio applauding Howard’s flexibility.

Howard started the first 10 games of the season at left guard under coach David Culley and offensive line coach James Campen before shifting to left tackle for three games due to offensive line injuries. Howard started 11 of the 15 games he appeared in in 2021 at left guard and four at left tackle.

Caserio stated last month that the organization is still trying to determine out where Howard will play in 2022. Howard’s fifth-year option has yet to be picked up by the Texans. There will be plenty of tackles available at either No. 3 or No. 13, thus his role will most likely be defined early in the first round.

Caserio may choose offensive tackle Charles Cross (Mississippi State) at No. 13 if Neal is gone or Houston goes in a different path at No. 3. Cross “may be the finest pure pass-protector in the whole class,” according to ESPN’s Todd McShay.

Defend yourself

McShay has the Texans picking Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux at No. 3 in his latest mock draft alongside Mel Kiper Jr., claiming that “Thibodeaux possesses an extraordinarily rapid first step off the edge.”

Houston has to improve defensively in a number of areas, but one of the most important is finding someone who can successfully pressure the quarterback. Last season, the Texans recorded 32 sacks, which ranked 28th in the NFL, and plainly didn’t replace former franchise face J.J. Watt’s output.

The Texans also have a need in the secondary with the free agency departure of safety Justin Reid. McShay has safety Kyle Hamilton (Notre Dame) going No. 11 to the Washington Commanders, and Houston might grab him. If Caserio moves down from No. 3, Hamilton may be his first choice.

Take a QB

While everything the Texans have done this offseason pointed to Mills getting a chance to start in 2022 (signing wide receiver Brandin Cooks to a contract deal, retaining Tunsil, and signing quarterback Kyle Allen as a backup), Caserio hasn’t openly ruled out picking a quarterback.

Caserio noted after selling Watson that although Mills “definitely earned a chance” in Houston, he never wants to rule out any position or player before a selection.

Given the amount of gaps on the Texans’ roster, it seems doubtful that they would sign a quarterback who does not project to be an exceptional franchise quarterback.

It would be surprising if they selected Malik Willis (Liberty), Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh), or Matt Corral (Ole Miss) with their first choice.

Reduced price

Caserio has intimated that he’s willing to trade down from No. 3 on multiple occasions.

Because this year’s draft lacks a strong quarterback class, there may not be as much interest in the No. 3 pick as there was a year ago, when the San Francisco 49ers traded up from 12 to get Trey Lance in exchange for the No. 12 pick in 2021, a first- and third-round pick in 2022, and a first-round pick in 2023.

Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Orleans Saints have numerous first-round selections and may be looking to trade them. New Orleans is more inclined to consider a trade up for a quarterback it feels can be a long-term solution.

The “texans draft picks 2023 ” is a question that has been asked many times. The Houston Texans have the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft and there are several options for what they could do with it.
