What Happens to John Walker’s Captain America in the Marvel Comics?

last two episodes of Falcon and The Winter Soldier were eventful for John Walker, the government-elected Steve Rogers, to replace Captain America’s mantle. In The Whole World Is Watching, Walker drugged himself with a super-soldier serum and then killed one of the flag-wavers in front of everyone in a furious attempt to avenge the Starhunter’s death. In the final episode of Truth, Walker loses his title of Captain America and his military rank. But he’s still convinced he’s Captain America and Carly Morganthau must pay for Lemar Hoskin’s death. In the scene after the credits, he builds a new shield to replace the one taken away.

The story follows closely the story of Walker in the comics, although with some changes and hints of a similar fate. How does this all play out in the Marvel Comics universe? First, it’s not Battlestar’s death that takes Walker out of the comics. Thus ended Walker’s time as Captain America and what happened next could spoil some of what’s to come in Falcon and the Winter Soldier

In the comics, Walker got the serum directly from the Power Broker and only then started acting like a superhero. Lemar Hoskins and two other Walker soldiers also received the serum. After a brief career as a Super Patriot, Walker was asked to play Captain America Lemar became a Battle Star, but the other two Super Soldiers failed the test. Frustrated, they storm a press conference where the new Captain America will be revealed, revealing the identity of John Walker, which had been kept secret.

The revelation of his identity was terrible news for Walker, especially since his first mission as Captain America was to infiltrate his hometown and root out a terrorist group, the Watchdogs. After discovering that Walker was Cap, the Watchdogs took his parents hostage to free him. Walker went against his orders to try to save his parents, but as soon as he started moving, the guard dogs opened fire and killed his mother and father. Walker spun, killed the entire watchdog group, then tracked down his old friends who had stormed his press conference and set them on fire.

Maybe the government is hoping to cover up Walker’s violent behavior. They would have stolen his role if the Flag Smasher (the one and only Carl Morgantau in the comics) hadn’t demanded to meet Captain America. The government sends Walker, but Flag-Smasher admits it’s not Steve Rogers he’s talking to and beats Walker in the fight. To save his friend, Battlestar went against Walker’s will to Steve Rogers’ house and persuaded him to save him.

Then Walker got into an argument with Hoskins. He learns that Red Skull is behind his never becoming Captain America, and eventually challenges Steve Rogers to reclaim the title of Captain America. But the government still had plans for John Walker. He couldn’t be a public icon like Captain America, but he could serve them in other capacities.

Walker received a new suit and shield (both of which had been left by Steve Rogers upon his return as Captain America) and a new codename, Agent USA. He is then sent to the West Coast Avengers where he works as a government liaison, which causes conflict between him and his teammates, but he eventually wins their respect. But the philosophical differences between him and the other Marvel heroes often put him at odds with the more popular Avengers. Walker tried to redeem himself and get out of Captain America’s shadow. He went on to work with teams like the Dark Avengers, Thunderbolts and Flight of Omega.

Do you expect Walker to become an American agent for the MCU? Can he get to the Thunderbolts? Tell us what you think in the comments.
