The news that Toys for Bob will be exclusively focused on ‘Call of Duty’ games in the future has upset fans of the developer’s other franchises, such as ‘Spyro’ and ‘Skylanders’. Toys for Bob has been working on the ‘Skylanders’ series since it was first announced in 2009, and is also responsible for the ‘Spyro’ reboot trilogy.

The developers of “Spyro,” “Rolando,” and “Battle for Bikini Bottom” have announced that they will no longer be developing games for a variety of platforms. Instead, Spryo’s creators, called “Toys for Bob,” will focus solely on the “Call of Duty” series. This marks a major shift in direction for the developers, since they’ve been creating games for different platforms for over a decade.

According to Game Rant, Toys for Bob is the latest studio to join Activision in the Call of Duty franchise. Following other talented developers like VIcarious visions, Raven Software, Neversoft, High Moon Studios and countless others, all Activision studios are included in Call of Duty Borg. Whether you love COD or not, the idea of different studios, known for their different genres and games, working on a single franchise should frighten gamers of all stripes.

Why it’s bad

Vicarious Visions and Neversoft developed the games Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Spider-Man. Raven Software developed Marvel Ultimate Alliance and X-Men Legends, while Toys for Bob developed Spyro Reignited Trilogy and the recent Crash Bandicoot 4.

These games include many different genres, such as. B. Beat ’em ups, platformers, extreme sports and more. With this short-sighted decision, Activision has effectively alienated fans of these specific genres and potential markets.

Yes, COD games sell consistently and their fanbase is loyal, but by putting all their eggs in one basket, Activision has left entire markets untapped. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 sold a million copies in its first two weeks, Crash Bandicoot N.

Sane Trilogy to over 2.5 million copies in the first three months after release.

And Activision itself has also announced that Spyro Reignited Trilogy has topped the sales charts. Of course, with such large numbers, it’s a disastrous decision that Activision will regret, right? Probably not, unfortunately.

Activison’s fourth quarter revenue recently rose 21% to $2.41 billion, so it doesn’t look like earnings will be negatively impacted anytime soon.

Is there hope?

Fortunately, when one publisher gives up an entire niche, others inevitably take its place. After Activision consigned the Spider-Man series to the trash and released one terrible game after another, Sony acquired the rights to the franchise and hired Insomniac Games to develop the critically acclaimed Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man.

While a new appearance of Crash or Spyro seems unlikely at the moment, studios like Insomniac and Double Fine are trying to take the itch out of a 3D platformer with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Psychonauts 2, respectively.

After all, publishers aren’t the only way developers can fund their games.

Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Fig have made possible games that AAA publishers arbitrarily deemed unprofitable.

A Hat in Time, Shovel Knight and Broken Age were successful games funded entirely by fans when the big publishers were afraid to take risks and experiment. While fans lament the loss of Crash, Spyro and many others, they are doing themselves a disservice by not supporting other developers trying to take the place of publishers like Activision.
