The trial of Derek Chauvin ended Friday with critical testimony from a senior Minneapolis Police Department official himself, who said Chauvin’s actions were completely unnecessary.

Police testimony against Chauvin, the former officer accused of killing George Floyd, could be crucial to the prosecution next week. Friday’s hearing ended early because the trial is ahead of schedule, the judge said. Here are the key points.

  • Lt. Richard Zimmerman, who heads the homicide division, said Chauvin’s actions violated police policy. Pulling him face down for so long and putting his knee on his neck is just unnecessary, said Zimmerman, who joined the force in 1985. He was one of 14 police veterans who wrote an open letter in June condemning Chauvin’s actions. Officials say the letter reflects the views of hundreds of police officers. That’s not who we are, they wrote.
  • The first witness of the day, Sergeant John Edwards, was sent to the Cup Foods convenience store after the arrest to secure the scene. Edwards said he followed protocol by asking officers who were still on the scene to turn on their cameras and identify areas where they had dealt with Floyd. He also asked them to try to find witnesses, even though most people had already left. Sergeant Edwards found at least one witness, Charles McMillian, who gave moving testimony earlier this week. At the scene, Mr. McMillian asked Sergeant Edwards if he was under arrest. When Sergeant Edwards said he didn’t want to, Mr. McMillian, he wanted out.
  • Additional police witness testimony will be an important tool for prosecutors to prove that Chauvin violated the use-of-force law and that his actions were unnecessary and illegal. Eric G. Nelson, Mr. Chauvin’s attorney, used his cross-examination of Lieutenant Zimmerman to temper these ideas. Mr. Nelson asked the lieutenant if people can become combat ready if they wake up unconscious. Lt. Zimmerman also stated that police officers are trained to kneel on people’s shoulders in certain circumstances when handcuffing someone. Throughout the trial, Nelson maintained that Chauvin’s knee was on Floyd’s back or shoulder, not on his neck.

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo speaks at a news conference during jury selection in the Derek Chauvin case…Credit…Nicholas Pfosi/Reuters

The death of George Floyd has sparked anger at Minneapolis police. But the conflict erupted before the officers arrived, Mr… Floyd got in touch – so much so that the department’s own head, Medaria Arradondo, the first black woman in that position, once filed a lawsuit accusing him of condoning racism.

According to a New York Times analysis, only 20% of Minneapolis residents are black, but about 60% of police brutality cases in Minneapolis involve blacks. City police use seven times more force against blacks than whites.

Pinning Derek Showwin with body weight on Mr. Floyd is one of the most popular mechanisms of violence in Minneapolis, and it’s also used in racially disparate ways. Since 2015, Minneapolis officials have used it about 2,200 times against black people, more than twice as often as against whites.

The influence of the city’s police union, the Minneapolis Federation of Police Officers, has made reforming the department a struggle, some analysts say. But since Mr. Floyd’s death, there have been some limited changes.

In December 2020, the Minneapolis City Council voted to cut $8 million – or nearly 4.5 percent – from the proposed $179 million police budget. The funds tapped will be used for the city’s violence prevention office to create a team of mental health professionals and city staff to handle crisis situations and handle minor complaints without police intervention.

Before Mr. Floyd had told many other people about Mr. Flynn’s abuse. Chauvin reported, including Chauvin, who tackled her to the ground with his knee after responding to a call about a family dispute. In nearly 20 years on the force, Chauvin has filed at least 22 complaints or conducted internal investigations, but only one has resulted in disciplinary violations.

This pattern is common: Since 2012, only 1 percent of complaints against Minneapolis police officers have resulted in disciplinary action, city data show.

The last question the prosecutor asked Lt. Richard Zimmerman, himself a Minneapolis police officer, was whether he saw any need for Officer Chauvin to improvise by placing his knee on Mr. Floyd for nine minutes and 29 seconds. Zimmerman replied: No, I haven’t. The issue came up after Derek Chauvin’s attorney pointed out that officers are allowed to improvise in dangerous situations.

During cross-examination, Lieutenant Richard Zimmerman, Derek Chauvin’s attorney, argues with the other witnesses: If unconscious suspects are brought back to life, they can become activists. Deadly force: Minneapolis Police Officer Describes Actions of Shovin

Lieutenant Richard Zimmerman, who responded to the scene of George Floyd’s arrest after he was taken away in an ambulance, testified in court that Derek Chauvin had not followed police protocol.

In all your years as a police officer in Minneapolis, have you ever been trained to kneel in the prone position behind a handcuffed person? No, it wasn’t. If this happened, would it be considered violence? Absolutely. What kind of performance could it be? This would be the next level, lethal violence. Why? Because if your knee is on a man’s neck, it could kill him. If the person is handcuffed, turn them onto their side or make them sit. You have to get it off your chest. Why? Because of – as I said, your muscles retract when you’re handcuffed. And if you lie on your chest, you’re even more out of breath.

Lieutenant Richard Zimmerman, who responded to the scene of George Floyd’s arrest after he was taken away in an ambulance, testified in court that Derek Chauvin had not followed police protocol. Credit… Freeze frame, on the court TV.

Minneapolis’ top police officer said Friday that Derek Chauvin violated department policy by kneeling around George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while he lay handcuffed on his stomach.

Lt. Richard Zimmerman, who was in charge of the Department’s homicide division and who responded to the scene of Mr. Floyd’s accident, testified in court that what Mr. Wat Chauvin did was totally unnecessary.

Pulling him face down for so long and putting his knee on his neck is just unnecessary, said Zimmerman, who joined the force in 1985.

Her testimony came on the fifth day of the trial of Mr. Showwin, a former police officer charged with murder in connection with Mr. Floyd’s death, and it followed the testimony of Mr. Showwin’s supervisor, who also criticized his actions. That supervisor, Sgt. David Pleoger, said Thursday that Chauvin should have stopped holding Floyd once he stopped responding, and that Chauvin did not initially disclose that he was on his knees with Floyd.

The prosecutor sought to show that Chauvin’s actions were unusually violent and that he did not comply with the Department’s policy on the use of force.

Lieutenant Zimmerman testified that officers were taught to free handcuffed persons from the prone position as quickly as possible – by turning them on their sides or making them sit up – and that officers were never taught to kneel on the necks of persons while they were handcuffed and in the prone position.

You need to get them off your chest, he said. If you lie on your chest, your breathing will be even more restricted.

Eric G. Nelson, Mr. Chauvin’s attorney took advantage of Lieutenant Zimmerman’s cross-examination to point out that he worked in the investigative unit and may not have been as familiar with the kind of force uniformed officers must use on patrol. Lt. Zimmerman agrees with Nelson when asked if people can become more combative after waking up unconscious. Lt. Zimmerman also stated that in some cases officers have been taught to kneel on someone’s shoulder when handcuffing.

Earlier this week, Mr. Nelson suggested that Mr. Floyd had turned slightly sideways; he tried to distract jurors from a high-profile video showing Mr. Chauvin kneeling with Mr. Floyd for more than nine minutes.

Lt. Zimmerman said Friday that officers have a duty of care for the man who was handcuffed.

His safety is your responsibility, Lieutenant Zimmerman. His well-being is your responsibility.

Lt. Zimmerman acknowledged that handcuffed men can still be unruly and may try to injure officers, such as by kicking them, but he said they generally pose a minor threat.

Once a person is handcuffed, the threat level drops, he said. You’re handcuffed. How can they really hurt you?

Zimmerman was among a group of 14 police veterans who wrote an open letter last June denouncing Chauvin. That’s not who we are, the letter says.

Friday was not the first time Lieutenant Zimmerman testified in a high-profile police brutality case. In 2019, he testified that the scene of the officer’s fatal accident in Minneapolis was well lit, which contradicted the argument of the officer’s attorneys that the lighting in the area was dim.

Minneapolis’ third police precinct has been empty since an arson attack in May. linked to credit Aaron Nesheim for The New York Times

Lt. Richard Zimmerman, who is testifying Friday in the Derek Chauvin case, was a homicide detective for more than 25 years and led the department for a dozen years with the Minneapolis Police Department.

The lieutenant was among a group of 14 police veterans who wrote an open letter in June condemning the actions of Derek Chauvin, who is accused of assaulting Mr… Killed Floyd, who remained on his knees for over nine minutes. In a letter to Minneapolis residents, officials were shocked by the manner of Mr. Floyd’s death. This is not who we are, they wrote, pointing out that Chauvin took an oath to preserve the sanctity of life.

The officials, who described themselves as representing hundreds of police officers, pledged to work to restore public confidence in the department. In the 2019 police murder case, Lieutenant Zimmerman’s testimony contradicted the officer’s statement that the light in the alley where the victim was shot was dim.

Sgt. John Edwards testifies Friday at the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. linked to Stop Motion credit on court TV.

Testimony resumed Friday morning in the trial of Derek Chauvin, with Minneapolis police Sgt. John Edwards. Sergeant Edwards was sent to Cup Foods to secure the scene after officers tackled George Floyd to the ground outside the grocery store.

In response to questions from the prosecutor, Sergeant Edwards stated that he was at the scene around 9:00 a.m. 35 м. 25. after being informed of a potentially critical incident. He said he was following standard procedures to ensure safety in the area.

These procedures included asking the two officers who were still at the scene, Thomas Lane and Alex Kueng, to turn on their body cameras, and asking the officers to indicate where they were with Mr. Lane. Floyd had cooperated, asking them to tape the crime scene to preserve evidence.

Sergeant Edwards also testified that he asked other officers to go door to door to interview anyone who had witnessed the events, since by that time most bystanders had dispersed.

I think we just took our chances, he said. Maybe there was someone who wanted to talk to us.

He said he spoke personally to a witness: Charles McMillian, who testified earlier this week. However, at the scene that night, Mr. McMillian refused to talk to police. According to Sergeant Edwards’ testimony, he asked him if he was under arrest, and when Sergeant Edwards said no, Mr. McMillian said he wanted to leave.

Born in Minneapolis, Sgt. Edwards has been with the Minneapolis Police Department for more than 10 years and works in the Third Precinct, which burned down last year after Floyd’s death. He’s currently on vacation.

Sgt. Edwards participated in the University of Minnesota-sponsored Police and Blacks project, which aims to develop fair and trusting relationships during semi-weekly meetings between a small group of police officers and African-Americans, according to the university’s website.

Judge Peter Cahill said he planned to send the jury home early Friday. linked to Court TV credit, via Associated Press.

The judge overseeing the trial of Derek Chauvin told jurors that testimony would end early Friday morning because the trial was ahead of schedule.

Judge Peter A. Cahill said he expects the testimony to end around 12:00 or 12:30 p.m. Friday, central time, and then he’ll send the jury home.

We are ahead of schedule in terms of the arrival of evidence, Judge Cahill said Thursday. For these and other unrelated reasons, we are taking tomorrow off.

It is not yet known what the additional grounds are and whether the attorneys will address the legal issues Friday afternoon without a jury, or whether the court will postpone the hearing.

There are other things that need to be done without involving our jury, Judge Cahill said.

He added that since the jurors will leave the building around noon, the court will not order them lunch as usual.

When Charles McMillian, a witness to George Floyd’s death, collapsed Wednesday afternoon while recounting what he had seen last May, Judge Peter Cahill called a brief recess to hear… Let McMillian calm down.

I was the reporter in the courtroom, I walked out into the hallway and sat down next to Rodney Floyd, Mr. Floyd’s younger brother. Floyd, who had come from Houston to attend the testimony that day.

Sir, I want to thank you for your support. Floyd was in tears after a new video presentation about his brother’s death. I explained to him that I was representing the media that day and asked him if he wanted to share his feelings with me, which I would in turn share with the rest of the media – and the world, of course – or leave him alone if that was what he wanted.

He said he wanted to talk, and just as I pulled out my notebook, a deputy came and told us not to talk.

This happened to me for the second time during the process. At one point during jury selection, I started talking to Angela Harrelson, Mr. Floyd’s aunt, whom I had met at a hearing last summer – and again a congressman intervened.

Lawyers representing a number of news organizations, including The New York Times, filed a motion with the court expressing concern about the strict rules prohibiting the Floyd family from speaking to the media outside the courtroom.

Toddrick Barnett, chief judge of Hennepin County, sets the rules for access and security. He declined to comment.

Due to pandemic restrictions that have severely limited participation in the trial, most days only three people are allowed in the courtroom who are neither jurors nor participants in the trial: a journalist representing digital media, a journalist representing broadcast media, and a relative of Floyd. (The court also assigned a seat to the family of Derek Chauvin, a former police officer charged with murder in connection with Mr. Floyd’s death, but so far no member of the Chauvin family has been present.)

ChauvinStudy: Day 4 highlights

As the Derek Chauvin murder trial entered its fourth day Thursday, there was testimony from George Floyd’s girlfriend and paramedics who were on duty the day M…. Floyd is dead. We were on duty.

Floyd is what I would call a mama’s boy. I knew it from the moment I met him. He loved his mother. So much. Do you swear or affirm under penalty of perjury that the testimony will be truthful and nothing less than the truth? Yes. Floyd and I’s story is a classic example of many people’s addiction to opioids. We both suffered from chronic pain. Mine was on my neck and his on my back. We both had a recipe. We became addicted to it and tried several times to break the addiction. Was there a moment in May 2020 when you thought he might use again? Yes. Remember when you told the FBI you were taking Mr… Hall the week before Mr. Floyd died? Yes, but I wasn’t there. I wasn’t there. I didn’t see anything happen. When you met with prosecutors yesterday, did you tell them that you were in the car at the hotel? Yes. When were these tablets purchased? Yes. And you’re on the phone with Mr. Floyd right now? Yes. And did you hear a voice in the background? Yes. And this is the voice you heard from Mr. Hall? That’s what I thought. From what I could see where I was, I couldn’t see anything, I couldn’t see breathing or movement or anything. Didn’t he seem to answer you then? As far as I can tell, just by standing in the distance, yes. And while your partner was out checking, were the officers still with George Floyd? Yes. So you noticed that his pupils were large and dilated. What about a pulse? I didn’t get a pulse. When you say palpat, does that mean you didn’t feel or sense a pulse? Yeah, I didn’t get a pulse. And how was his condition for you in all respects? It’s simple: I thought he was dead. Yeah, I was just gonna call you and ask if you were coming over. Not really, but we just had to keep the guy, he got mad. … Not at the moment. Based on the body camera footage, do you have an opinion on when Mr. B. was tied up? Should Floyd have been in this match? Yes. What is it? When Mr. Floyd stopped resisting, the officers were able to handcuff him. This was after he was handcuffed and lying on the ground, not resisting. That’s right. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. I have no further questions, Your Honor.
