The May update came out last week and brought with it a ton of new features, including the much-requested (and long overdue) ability to play background music while you play. The new version also allows for the addition of new background images, so you can customize your play experience even more than before. And, of course, the game now has leaderboards by social media, a much-needed feature to avoid defeat at the hands of your friends and family. We showed you how to get the update early – but if you haven’t yet been able to download the new version, don’t worry! It’s coming to everyone soon!
One of the most frustrating things about playing video games on a phone was long loading times and having to wait for apps to open. Fortunately, the May update to Windows Phone 8.1 changed that. The latest update has enabled better multitasking and enabled the phone to be more responsive. This has been especially evident with applications like the social media client app and the messaging app. When the apps first launched there was a noticeable lag, but the latest update seems to have resolved these issues. The result is that the apps feel much more crisp and fluid.
May’s firmware update brought some new options to Xbox series consoles.
Let’s go straight to the details on the Microsoft website about the May firmware update: New improvements to Quick Recovery : Quick Resume is a feature built on the technical capabilities of the Xbox X series’ innovative Xbox Velocity architecture. So you can switch seamlessly between games and pick up right where you left off. With this update, fast recovery is even better, improving reliability and reducing boot times.
We’ve also made it easier to find and open the games that are supported and saved in the fast recovery. This new tag allows you to check if your current game supports fast recovery. Xbox Series X|S players can also enjoy a new group that lists all games currently saved in Quick Resume. You can use this group to see which games are ready to be spun from the fast resume and spin them from there. As with the other groups, you can add them to the home page for faster access, or you can customize them by removing the set from the Quick Replay.
In addition, we have an audio transmission option for multimedia applications: Try passthrough for even better sound in Xbox media streaming apps like Disney+, the Apple TV app, Plex, Vudu and more. The passthrough feature allows you to decode audio from multimedia applications on compatible HDMI devices to bypass the console and provide a high-quality listening experience with an external sound system. To use it, see the new Allow Passthrough button on the Xbox Audio Settings screen. You’ll see an indicator in the guide if you’re using a compatible media application with end-to-end audio enabled, Microsoft adds.
With Xbox Game Pass, you can now watch trailers of games: Discover your next favorite game on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One with faster, easier access to game trailers from your Xbox Game Pass library. Games in the Game Pass hub now play trailers when you focus on them. This means less clicking when you want to check out the latest and greatest Game Pass add-ons. To play the trailers with sound, click on a tile. Very good.
Let’s take a look at the others: New dynamic backgrounds. Motes: For the launch of the Xbox Series X|S, the team added dynamic backgrounds, a new feature that lets you customize your home screen with movement and color. This month we offer you a new model – Motes. You can find the new Motes dynamic background under Settings > General > Personalization > My Background > Dynamic Background.
Ask your parents: Multiplayer by name : Starting this month, you can claim multiplayer games – where you can play and chat with other players – with a specific name directly from your console or in the Xbox Family Settings app. If your child wants to play a particular game in multiplayer mode, but it is blocked by the family settings, he or she can send a request to unlock multiplayer mode for that game only.
The Xbox app for Android and iOS keeps getting better: Last month, we added leaderboards to the Xbox app on Android and iOS. This month, we’re continuing to improve that experience with a few more updates. First: Stay connected with a new push notification that lets you know when your favorite friends are online. We are also updating the game performance pages to add game statistics, including game times. Finally, reliability is extremely important to us, and we are happy to announce that we have made some changes that improve performance when loading the chat tab and sending messages in the app, Microsoft said in an email.
Finally, the SmartGlass app says goodbye to the sunset: We are discontinuing the Xbox One SmartGlass for PC app as of June this year. This means that the SmartGlass app will be removed from the Windows Store and there will be no updates for those who have already downloaded the app on their device. You can still use the Xbox for PC app with Windows 10 to discover and download new games from Xbox Game Pass, see what your friends are playing, and chat with them on PCs, mobile devices, and Xbox consoles.
It’s not bad.
