cameo of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier in Episode 5 got a strong reaction from fans and hints at big things to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe The character in question is actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld, Veep), who plays the Marvel Comics character Contessa Valentine Allegra de Fontaine. As soon as Marvel Comics fans saw Contessa on screen, the wheels started turning on what the Dreyfus arc would look like in the MCU. Valentine comes across as a rather sleazy comic, but there is one aspect that seems to be clearly related to the Black Widow movie story.
In the comics, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (or Val) was one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most notable interns, quickly attracting the attention of Nick Fury after she spanked him during a training session. Val and Nick have been in love for a while, but it turns out that Fury (himself an elite superspy) can’t let his guard down.
In short: It turns out that Valentina comes from a family of sleeper agents loyal to the secret organization Leviathan. Leviathan was one of the organizations that broke away from a collective of the world’s top eleven secret agents and members of a secret society called Zodiac. When the group broke up, members left to form some of the most important underground organizations in the Marvel universe. These parallel groups included SHIELD, HYDRA, the Hand and Leviathan, the latter of which had its origins in the Soviet Union. The leaders of the Leviathan are actually the ones who betrayed the Zodiac by trying to steal the group’s loot, an unlimited source of energy that can turn people into superhumans. Valentina Allegra played a role in SHIELD and then infiltrated Hydra as the new Madame Hydra – but it was all to help Leviathan rise up and go to war against rival organizations.
The introduction of Fontaine’s Valentina Allegra into the MCU seems like a clear signal that Leviathan will be Black Widow’s real big bad. In the storyline of black widow Natasha Romanov (Scarlet Johannsson) returns to Russia to investigate clues about a new super spy program. Who will run this program except the Leviathan?
This is reasonable speculation: Julia Louis-Dreyfus was previously seen in Black Widow as Valentine before COVID-19 forced Falcon and the Winter Soldier to break free first. It seems pretty clear that the Marvel Comics story is set in the MCU.
Leviathan and his connection to the Zodiac story is really a storyline that seems to be taking shape in Phase 4 of the MCU. Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. appear in the Secret Invasion series, and Hand could easily fit into Shang Chi’s story (even if she has returned to the Ten Rings organization). Valentine is a goal for both HYRDA and Leviathan, and Black Widow can really push things forward by showing how Leviathan has been forging plans since before Snap and Blip.
