Music downloading may seem to be on the way out due to the great success of streaming services such as Spotify and Deezer. Nevertheless, you might be interested in solutions to download songs for free to your smartphone, and listen to them without an internet connection. We have listed here some of the best applications to help you do this legally.

All these applications can download files for free. However, you must keep in mind that just because a song is available for free download, it does not mean that it is royalty-free. Radio Player by Audials: the best for radio recording

Radio Player by Audials is one of the best ways to download free music available on Android, but it is somewhat unconventional. Although you can download a whole bunch of songs with Radio Player by Audials, everything comes straight from the radio.

Radio Player by Audials has tens of thousands of radio stations from dozens of countries; you can start listening to them as soon as you find them and, by tapping a few times on its menu, you can start downloading them.

It is a complete, well-designed application that offers discovery functions, equalization controls and Chromecast support. In addition, Radio Player by Audials allows you to schedule recordings for an automatic supply of new music from your favorite stations. It’s the best app of its kind and a must for fans of free music.

SoundCloud: the best for quality and quantity

SoundCloud is one of the best free music apps if you’re not just looking for tracks or famous artists. The application is popular with independent or smaller artists who download their tracks so that everyone can listen to them for free, with many tracks also available for download. In addition to more than 125 million songs, SoundCloud also hosts talk shows, podcasts, virtually anything audio.

Every musical genre you can imagine is covered. The free version is mainly aimed at independent artists and can be a great way to discover new music or take a look at the next big trend or emerging genre. Big names from the music world are also present but their songs are mainly available on the pay version.

Songily: simplicity itself

Songily is a free application that offers a simple and pleasant interface to search, and then play or download the music you want… provided they have it, of course. Your use may vary according to your expectations, and the search for a famous song may sometimes be imperfect. The tool will offer you a host of covers, live versions and remixes to download legally and safely, rather than the official version of the album. Nevertheless, there is still a wide selection of good tracks available for free, so it’s worth a look.

RockMyRun: the best for training

RockMyRun allows you to download music for playback without an internet connection, or simply offers to hide it, which is just as well (and less likely to exist in a legal grey area). RockMyRun offers DJ-mixed playlists for practice soundtracks and more.

You can match your BPM to your heart rate, filter the length of the playlist to match your workout, or use the myBeat feature to automatically change songs to match your mood. What’s better than DJ mixes adapted to your training style?

Google Play Music: the best for Android fanboys

This is another of the best Play Store applications for music downloads. Google Play Music is Google’s marketplace for music on Android, but it also regularly offers free songs and albums for download. Google Play Music is also a music player in its own right (it even honored our list of the best music players on Android).

Advanced Download Manager: the best for fast downloads

This advanced download manager allows you to download three files simultaneously, including MP3s and MP4s. It includes a number of different settings that allow you to customize the way files are downloaded, including limiting the download speed (so that you don’t use up too much of your bandwidth) and the number of concurrent downloads. The advanced download manager also offers incredibly fast download speeds.

The application’s browser doesn’t make finding free tracks as easy as it could be, but once you find what you’re looking for, downloading tracks becomes easier.

Anghami: the best for oriental audio

Feel like oriental music? Anghami targets users in the Middle East where it is an alternative to Google Play Music. But for those of us who don’t live there, it’s an excellent tool to discover free oriental songs. The free service is not unlimited and will run a few ads, but this is not a problem if you really want to discover new oriental sounds.

Loffee – Lo-Fi Music

Loffee is a simple but wonderful little application for Lo-Fi beat fans. It’s the kind of thing I could listen to on a long train trip, or lounging at home on a Sunday afternoon. The various playlists are thematic, such as Dark Roast, Fresh Grinds and Roasted Beans. The user interface and artwork are superb. Everything about Loffee just seems cool. You can retrieve information about art or music at any time during playback, and links to Facebook, SoundCloud, Instagram and Twitter allow you to explore further.
