Let’s compare the data sheet of the Redmi Note 5 Pro with that of the Redmi Note 6 Pro. It is difficult at first glance to detect the differences as the technical characteristics are so close. The SoC is identical: Snapdragon 636 for both, the battery capacity is the same. The screen is a little bigger on the new device, it now has a size of 6,2″, but we have the notch.

Good news, the jack plug is still in the game, but Xiaomi persists in offering microUSB on this range of devices. On the photo side, we are still talking about two sensors of 12 and 5 MP that have slightly evolved. Then, we are entitled to a double choke sensor unlike the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Once again, we find a large 4000 mAh battery, the smartphone promises to be a champion of autonomy.

Design

The screen of the smartphone is 6.2″ and this time we find a notch with a small chin. A small loudspeaker, a dual photo sensor and a notification LED are housed in the notch. Then, on the right edge we discover the volume buttons and the ON / OFF button. The dual nano SIM slot is located on the left side.

A jack port and an IR sensor are present on the top edge of the Redmi Note 6 Pro. The microUSB port and two loudspeaker grilles are integrated in the bottom slice. The back of the device looks like many other Xiaomi smartphones. Dual photo sensor and fingerprint sensor are present in the upper part.

The hull is made of a mixture of glass, metal and plastic. Apart from the notch, the appearance of the Redmi Note 6 Pro changes very little compared to its predecessor. Xiaomi doesn’t try to stand out too much, the smartphone lacks the personality to stand out. One might also ask what is the point of offering a notch when the bottom edge is so important.

Screen

The IPS LCD panel displays 1080 x 2280 pixels at a 19:9 ratio. It is protected by a Gorilla Glass coating, but Xiaomi did not specify which version. The screen is longer than the Redmi Note 5 screen. There is sufficient light to use it in all conditions, except perhaps in bright sunlight.

The colours are vivid and the contrasts deep, as far as possible we do not have an OLED screen. The manufacturer provides as often a good slab especially for a smartphone offered at a very competitive price. Users will be able to enjoy their content with peace of mind.

Performance of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro

The Snapdragon 636 is not so old yet, it was introduced in October 2017. He’s back in service, we’ve already seen him in the bowels of the Redmi Note 5. In concrete terms, we are entitled to the same performance. The model we are testing has 3 GB of RAM, so it is a bit weaker than its successor in terms of multitasking. However, it is possible to play, but you should not expect the same performance as the market stars equipped with Snapdragon 845 for example.

Asphalt Xtreme: Rally Racing will be running correctly just like Asphalt 9. Without being a war lightning bolt, the experience is satisfactory, although we do not recommend this device for gaming. Overall, we find the device fluid under all circumstances. You really have to load the mule well to start feeling the slightest lag.

To compare the performance with other mid-range devices, we ran the Redmi Note 6 Pro on the AnTuTu and Geekbench grill. The performance is almost identical to the results obtained with the Redmi Note 5 Pro. On AnTuTu we see a small fall, but nothing terrible. The results are shown in the table below:

Interface

MIUI 10 is now available on the Redmi Note 5 in global version… but not on our Redmi Note 6 Pro also in global version. We have no explanation for this weirdness when this device has just been launched. It’s probably a matter of days or weeks.

So we are entitled to MIUI 9.6 based on Android Oreo. The Chinese manufacturer’s interface is impactful compared to devices equipped with an Android One offering a pure experience, such as the Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. Rest assured, everything is perfectly fluid and reacts to the finger and the eye. We don’t have an application drawer, as is often the case on Asian ROMs.

Beyond the purely aesthetic aspect, Xiaomi offers good ideas in its overlay. Some features include application cloning, call and SMS filtering and Mi Drop allows you to easily share your files over WiFi. Other overlayers also offer this type of option of course. It’s always nice to have it without having to download other applications.

Audio

There is a port … microUSB … but also a jack port, good news. While many manufacturers are getting rid of it, this good old jack is still making resistance on new devices coming out at the end of 2018. But for how much longer? Moreover, the policy on Xiaomi is not very clear, once it is there and bang, another time it disappears.

The audio quality of the speakers is the same as with its predecessor. Lows not very present, but highs and mediums correct. Distortions are present at high volume, but this is more controlled than on other smartphones. A Bluetooth speaker will in any case be highly recommended to take full advantage of good quality sound.

Network & GPS

GPS positioning is fast, everything works perfectly from the start. The Redmi Note 6 Pro is also GLONASS, BDS and GALILEO compatible.

On the 4G side, good news since the smartphone is compatible with B20 800MHz, but not B28 700 MHz. A data to be taken into account according to your operator. Free Mobile, for example, is greatly expanding its coverage in the 700 MHz band. In any case, Xiaomi continues to make efforts in this area, even if it is not perfect.

Xiaomi Redmi Camera Note 6 Pro

In 2018, Xiaomi surprised us particularly well in the field of photography. The Redmi Note 6 Pro will be no exception to this rule and for good reason. It has a dual photo sensor almost similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. This refers to a 12 MP sensor opening at f/1.9 and another sensor for the 5 MP depth of field opening at f/2.0.

Once again, for a smartphone offered at such a price, Xiaomi impresses. The shots captured outdoors with good light are rich in detail, and the colours are faithful. The portrait mode is once again a success. The background blur is controlled and does not spill over to the main subject. Indoors, the situation is the same, as long as the luminosity is high enough.

In low light conditions, it’s a whole different story. The noise appears sufficiently quickly. To optimize shooting, Xiaomi has introduced AI. This optimizes the camera settings to take the best possible pictures depending on the subject. Example with food, the camera increases the brightness. Of course, the application is able to recognize other objects, plants, buildings, etc…

The little exhibition problems we had noticed from time to time with the Redmi Note 5 seem to have disappeared. The camera does better than its predecessor. It’s barely noticeable, but it’s making a micro leap forward.

The biggest change is to be found on the other side. A dual sensor is also present at the front, the main one is 20 MP and opens at f/2.0 while the second one is 2 MP and is used for depth of field. We lose the front LED flash, Xiaomi now uses the screen that turns white in the dark to compensate. In any case, the result is really good for a frontal camera. We have never had such a service on a device offered at such a price.

Again, video recording is limited to 1080p. But the electronic image stabilization is very correct. Image quality is satisfactory under all conditions except low light. Audio recording has difficulty with subjects that are too far away or, on the contrary, those that are too close… and too noisy. The sound saturates quickly.

The camera interface is not much changed from our previous tests of Xiaomi smartphones. To change modes, simply slide your finger on the screen, panorama, portrait, manual…

Autonomy of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro

The autonomy of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is excellent. The 4000 mAh battery will hold the shock easily for 2 big days. It’s exactly the same ability as on its predecessor. This champion of autonomy will however take a little time, count a little more than 2 hours for a full recharge with the charger provided. Xiaomi offers small software optimizations in case of a glitch when an electrical outlet is not nearby. We ran a video with sound at 50% and brightness at maximum on YouTube for an hour and lost barely 15% battery life.

Prices and availability

158,40 € is the price listed at Gearbest for the version with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. Admittedly, the space may be a little small for some. The version with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage is 50 euros more expensive. The price remains very affordable in both cases. Those looking for a pure Android experience can always turn to its cousin, the sublime Mi A2.

Conclusion

Once again, Xiaomi hits the nail on the head. Admittedly, the smartphone has not changed much compared to its predecessor. It is clear that the owners of the excellent Redmi Note 5 have no interest in turning to this Redmi Note 6 Pro. Small evolution in photo, notch, good autonomy. It’s hard to find any real negative points to this excellent smartphone with a very aggressive price-performance ratio.

OUR OPINION ON THE XIAOMI REDMI NOTE 6 PRO

Xiaomi offers once again an excellent smartphone. The Redmi Note 6 Pro is impressive in every way. Aggressive price, good screen, good autonomy, good photo skills (in its category), not to mention an excellent fluidity of its Android interface. Although we regret that we still have to camp on MIUI 9.

While the evolution is not very marked compared to its predecessor, this smartphone is worth looking into. In addition the global / international version is already available, so why go without?

We like

  • Design, but…
  • Prices Prices Prices Prices Prices
  • Nice screen

  • Camera
  • Autonomy

We like less

  • …too banal, notch and… chin…
  • A heavy hair
  • But what else about the microUSB
