Test Xiaomi Mi 9 Se: the New Snapdragon 712 is Wreaking Havoc for Just 300 Euros

Portrait mode

The Mi 9 SE from Xiaomi has what it takes to shake up the mid-range thanks to its excellent price/performance ratio.

After the Mi Mix 3, the Mi 9, the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi 7… Here is the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE ! The Chinese giant is continuing its momentum and offers a new version of the Mi 9 at a more affordable price thanks to a lighter technical data sheet. Its name should put its chip in your ear: it faces the Samsung Galaxy 10 SE and iPhone XR in terms of size and features. But its low price (between 300 and 350 euros in imports) risks once again catapulting the price segment. The first to also equip himself with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 712, he promises a lot.

Here is the data sheet of the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE at the best price

JDG OFFER: the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is offered at 284.76 euros (version 6+64 GB) at Gearvita with the code JGMiSE64, or 330 euros for the version 6+128 GB with the code JGMi9SE128! Limited offer.

Design and Display

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE boasts an elegant style that could be the perfect marriage between the classic Mi 9 and the Remdi Note 7. It also comes with a small notch in the shape of a water drop. Her mirrored back has blue reflections and… fingerprints. It is particularly slippery and does not hold flat, the fault lies with a protruding triple back photo module.

The layout of its buttons, sensors, ports, speaker grids, Nano Sim card drawers are right where you expect them. It has no jack socket or notification LEDs, but maintains the same fingerprint sensor in the display as the Mi 9. Its responsiveness proves satisfactory on a daily basis, even if it remains a little slower than a more traditional reader.

Its compact enough size for a 2019 smartphone guarantees an excellent grip. Between its small casing and its 5.9″ 19.5/9″ screen, it prevents us from doing too many pirouettes with our fingers to wait for all the information on the slab. Since we’re talking about the latter, it should be noted that the manufacturer has chosen Amoled technology with Full HD+ definition (2340 x 1080 pixels). Very pleasing to the eye, the slab enjoys infinite contrast, good luminosity and a rather faithful rendering of colours.

Software and Performance

Unsurprisingly the Mi 9 SE hosts Android 9 Pie and MIUI 10.2. Small disappointment, as for the Redmi 7, the security update starts to date (February 2019). The advantage of Xiaomi’s overlay is the set of customization elements that makes the software experience quite complete. The display settings allow you to change the temperature, colors, brightness, contrasts, etc. as usual as well as a really nice night mode. A smart way to rest your eyes and save battery power, since let’s remember on the oled black pixels are dead pixels! Facial recognition, as usual for Xiaomi, can be activated if you choose a geographical area that allows it like Hong Kong.

This lighter version of the Mi 9 integrates for the first time the Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 mobile chip, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The experience is fluid in everyday life, even for 3D games. Benchmarks display results accordingly.

Autonomy and Recharging

The Mi 9 SE has a good range. Its 3070 mAh battery allows it to easily last more than a day and a half. At 100% on the first day at 2:50 p.m., it dropped to 57% at midnight and to 0% on the second day a few minutes before midnight. With the night mode activated, you can pick up a few extra hours.

With the official charger provided in the packaging of the global version, the Mi 9 SE goes from 7% to 47% in 23 minutes. It takes one hour to reach 90% and about an hour and a half to recover full battery capacity. Note that it is not compatible with wireless charging.

The Mi 9 SE features three rear-mounted cameras, including a 48-megapixel sensor and an f/1.8 lens. The second 8 Megapixel sensor is dedicated to 2x zoom with a lens that opens at f/2.4. Finally, the third 13-megapixel sensor is dedicated to very wide-angle lenses with an f/2.4 aperture. Artificial intelligence can be turned on or off, but just be aware that it does not capture in 48 Megapixels.

In highlights the shots are really not bad with good contrast, details, texture effects and quite vivid colors. The very wide-angle does not show too much distortion and maintains a certain quality in its pictures, as does the 2x zoom. Hard to find better on this price range! It becomes more complicated when the camera has to deal with backlights and scenes that play a little too much with the dynamic range. The image tends to burn, blur or even display some kind of strange halo. The HDR mode does not save the bet and I advise you not to use the AI, very often it completely distorts the colors.

At night colour tones are lost in detail and variety, but the results are still quite satisfactory in the majority of cases. The night mode can retrieve more information, but sometimes you have to accept that an orange veil is incrusted.

The 20 Megapixel front camera does not like too bright environments, as the selfies below attest. There is a bokeh effect that can be adjusted before or after capture using software processing. Also, the photo application is equipped as usual with a complete beauty mode and all kinds of filters.
