Huawei is the world’s second largest manufacturer of smartphones and its P-Smart is the firstborn of 2019. Huawei presents here a smartphone at an affordable price but which has a lot to offer, as you can read below.

Plus

  • ✓Bon value for money
  • ✓Bon screen
  • ✓Bonne autonomy

Minus

  • ✕Appareil disappointing photo
  • ✕Son disappointing

An affordable price

Huawei’s first P Smart had a recommended retail price of 259 euros, the Huawei P Smart 2019 sees its price drop slightly with an official price of 249 euros. You can already buy it for a little cheaper on many sales platforms.

A pleasant design

The Huawei P Smart 2019 isn’t really what you’d call a small smartphone, but it looks good in the hand. The case is made of plastic, a material that some may not find noble enough but which has the merit of being lighter than what is usually found on the top end, namely glass and metal. The only small defect worth noting is the back of the device, which catches fingerprints very quickly. For the second problem, you can use a shell to get around the problem.

The screen of the new P Smart from Huawei is 6.21 inches long and has a small notch on the top edge. Of course, this last one welcomes the front camera. The speaker is almost invisible, located in a small slot in the chassis. Around, to the right and left of the screen, the borders are very thin, but underneath the screen the P Smart 2019 has a slightly wider chin. The black model looks a bit banal, the version with a gradient (called Aurora Blue) seems much more interesting.

The P Smart 2019 has been manufactured successfully, the transitions are pleasantly smooth. Only the holes for the speaker output, the micro-USB port and the headphone jack are a bit sharp. The keys have clear pressure points and do not flicker – which is not really common in this price range. The fingerprint sensor, which is located on the back of the device, is easy to find with the finger and has a matt surface. The button is placed a bit deep, it’s not necessarily very aesthetic and it feels a bit strange to the touch, but for a smartphone of this price range it’s quite acceptable. Finger recognition works perfectly and quickly.

A large screen

Huawei has equipped the P Smart 2019 with a large display with a rather interesting definition for this price range: 2,340 x 1,080 pixels for 6.21 inches, which gives a pixel density of 414 dpi. This TFT screen offers good brightness and fairly natural colours, but cannot compete with high quality OLED screens in terms of contrast and dynamics. Whether you want to use the device in bed or at the beach, the brightness is pretty good and the reflections are not disturbing, but at this time of the year the sun doesn’t shine much either so it’s hard to say for sure.

Around the notch and towards the bottom edge, the Huawei P Smart 2019’s screen illumination is not completely uniform. There are small shadows that stand out when the entire screen shows bright colours. You can hide the notch by placing black on its right and left. It’s a matter of taste, but it’s not really an advantage.

The screen of the P Smart 2019 comes with a protective film that is rather difficult to remove. It is advisable to simply leave them in place, as this protects the glass from scratches.

Android Pie pre-installed!

Android 9 Pie should be the standard on new smartphones now, and that’s the case with Huawei. With the current version of Android and the November 2018 security patch, the P Smart 2019 comes with the EMUI 9 overlay, which is still a bit strange but has many features. You will find an application drawer in the system settings if you find it missing.

By default, the Huawei P Smart 2019 comes with the Android Virtual Navigation Bar with three buttons – Back, Home and Multitasking. It is also possible to use a gestural command or a circle-shaped dock.

Highly satisfactory performance for a lambda user

The new P model is powered by a processor from Hisilicon, a subsidiary of Huawei. This is the Kirin 710, a chip that has eight cores and reaches a maximum clock frequency of 2.2 GHz, we have already seen it in the Honor 8X in particular. There is no separate AI unit like the Kirin 980. The processor is supported by 3 GB of RAM.

The smartphone offers very decent performance for this price range. Of course, the difference with the performance of the flagships is noticeable, it’s quite normal, but this young P Smart can still be proud of itself. Unsurprisingly, complex games and high-resolution videos are not really the domain of choice for this device, so don’t expect to be able to play PUBG in perfect fluidity. The Huawei P Smart 2019 performs daily tasks without any problems, but you have to admit that applications sometimes like to take their time.

Photos, music, applications and other data are stored on the 64 GB internal memory. After the first boot, there are still 50 GB available. Those who need more can make do with a microSD card. The new Nano Memory Card format can only be used in the high-end segment at Huawei.

In short, a smartphone that proves to be quite sufficient for classic mid-range use. We tested the device on benchmarks, note that some numbers on 3DMark are strange and some tests did not work well, so I advise to take these results with a lot of hindsight.

Sound and video are not the smartphone’s strengths

Not so long ago, having a dual camera was something very special. Things have changed, today we can find them in almost every price range. Here, the resolution is 13 and 2 megapixels, this second sensor being of course used for depth images. The front camera has an 8 megapixel sensor.

The camera application is familiar to other Huawei smartphones, it has many features and even a pro mode. You can also make your own settings for portraits and use a simulated aperture mode. If for some mysterious reason you want to use stickers (such as location and weather) in your photos, you can do so.

The camera in the Huawei P Smart 2019 is quite fast when focusing and taking pictures. However, photos quickly lack detail, especially in low light, and become blurred. In better conditions, it is possible to take more respectable photos. In short, no surprises, the camera does the job but no miracles: during the day the results are about right, boredom spoils things.

The front camera is sufficient for video calls and occasional selfies, but does not meet the highest requirements. For 200 euros, the experience is still acceptable, but that’s as far as it goes.

As far as sound goes, it’s not the best we’ve seen here either. The single loudspeaker is not really brilliant and if the quality is better with a headphone jack, the volume is quite disappointing, in noisy situations such as the subway you will have to turn the volume up to a fairly high level.

Good autonomy

As usual, the Huawei P Smart 2019 is equipped with a non-removable battery. Its capacity is 3400 mAh, a rather classic value but in practice the smartphone can hold without any problem a whole day without going through the recharging box, possibly 2 with a little less use. However, there is no wireless charging system or quick charging system.

Final Verdict

The Huawei P Smart 2019 is a very good value for money, but its only shortcomings penalize it a lot: the photo quality leaves a lot to be desired and the sound too. If you are obsessed with Instagram and want to publish a lot of photos, this is not the smartphone for you.

On the other hand if you have a classic use (instant messaging, surfing, social networks etc) this smartphone should suit your needs because it offers good performance, a good screen and a very good autonomy, all for a fairly modest sum (for a smartphone, at least).
