The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 also features Bluetooth version 4.1 and a 3000 mAh battery, 800 mAh more than the original model. All this under Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.0, two very good points.

Why a Huawei P8 Lite 2017?

The P8 Lite released in 2015 was the brand’s best-selling smartphone for a very long time. The P9 Lite, launched last year, was not as successful, prompting Huawei to offer a 2017 model of its P8 Lite, to build on its name, its success, and the confidence that dealers and operators place in this best-selling model. However, the brand did not content itself with a simple name change.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: A Pretty Design

The first thing you notice when you follow the news of Huawei and Honor products is that P8 Lite looks a lot like Honor 8, and for good reason, it is nothing less than an Honor 8 Lite made for the French market. The physical resemblance is therefore not surprising.

The glass back and the slightly curved screen at the edges as well as the rounded shapes give this P8 Lite 2017 a good grip despite its 5.2 inches and 4 mm extra width compared to the original. The fingerprint reader on the back is a welcome addition. As we will see in the software part, the latter is proving to be very efficient and functional.

The two loudspeaker grilles on the lower edge house a single loudspeaker, below the right grille. The flap on the left side accommodates either two nanoSIM cards or a SIM card and a microSD card up to 256 GB. The frame is made of plastic (polycarbonate), the grip of the buttons is good, and the manufacturing quality is quite honorable for a smartphone of this range.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Full HD IPS Display

The P8 Lite 2017 is slightly different from the 2015 model, this time with a 5.2-inch Full HD panel that offers a fine display thanks to its 424 dpi resolution. So the phone has nothing to be ashamed of in this respect compared to its competitors. Contrast is excellent for an IPS display and maximum brightness is very high, so you can use the P8 Lite 2017 outdoors without having to worry about readability.

The colour temperature is not perfect, but the colorimetry is good. Huawei now has the know-how and the days when mid-range phones could make our eyes bleed are long gone. Without reaching heights, the screen is of high quality, and that is exactly what is asked of it.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Benchmarks and Performance

In terms of performance, this Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is, unsurprisingly, on a par with an Honor 6X, with which it shares most of the technical specifications. High theoretical scores that sometimes even allow themselves to do better than the P9 Lite on some benchmarks. With scores of 57622 on AnTuTu and 3311 on Geekbench in multi-core, the new P8 Lite is close to a Galaxy A5, but only on the CPU level.

Indeed, it is the graphic part of the SoC that is driving the performance of the smartphone, especially in game. The Mali-T830MP2 GPU is clearly not a thunderbolt of war. With only 8415 points on Basemark X, the theoretical part was not engaging. We have been able to confirm this in practice with Gamebench and Real Racing 3, known for its graphic requirements.

Over a 26-minute session of play, the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 ran at an average of 27 FPS. The score would be correct if the GPU didn’t stall at times to the point of experiencing large slowdowns with framerate drops of up to 10 FPS when many items are displayed on the screen. If you plan to play, stick to less demanding games.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: EMUI 5.0 and Android 7.0 interface

The P8 Lite 2017 has the good taste to be directly released under Android 7.0 Nougat with the EMUI 5.0 interface. So it takes advantage of the latest features of Huawei’s interface such as the ability to put an application drawer if you don’t like to have them all directly on the desktops.

The quick search by sliding your finger down from any desktop or the ability to change the navigation buttons are great features. The applications installed by default are not too numerous, but the 16 GB storage capacity very quickly shows its limits, the investment in a microSD card is strongly advised.

The smartphone benefits from the latest version of Huawei’s fingerprint reader, with all the features that come with it. Except for the ability to set up up to five fingerprints, you can use the sensor to take pictures, answer a call, cancel an alarm, or scroll down the notification panel or scroll through pictures by touching it.

The fingerprint reader also secures the safe in which you will be able to store your sensitive files and encrypt them so that no one can access them. The floating menu, the reduced display to use the one-handed interface and the fast calls thanks to the voice command (in French), are all options that make EMUI even more complete.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Audio Quality

While the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 may not be the smartphone of choice for audiophiles, it delivers the essentials. Black headphones are in the box. Once plugged into the headphone jack, they offer correct sound quality as long as you do not exceed 50%. Beyond that, a tin can effect can be heard.

The mono loudspeaker located under the right grille on the bottom edge of the phone delivers correct quality if you don’t push it too far. Its positioning will not be a problem when you hold the smartphone vertically. Horizontally, be careful not to obstruct with the palm of your hand.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Network and GPS

On the network side, no change between the 2015 and 2017 version as far as network compatibility is concerned. Almost all the frequency bands used in France are covered, with the exception of the 700 MHz band, which is widely used by Free in particular.

RAS for the rest, the 4G of category 4 allows theoretical flows up to 150/50 Mb/s, the network attachment is good, as is the GPS attachment with a first fix recorded in only 7 seconds, with an accuracy of 5 meters.

The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is dual SIM, which is quite handy if you have the need. On the other hand, you’ll have to choose between a second nanoSIM card or the microSD card, which is quickly becoming indispensable if you’re not the type to store all your photos and videos in the cloud.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Camera

The photo application is very complete with a host of modes found throughout the Huawei range. From Pro photo and Pro video modes to HDR, light painting and timelapse, you’ll have plenty to express your creativity and expertise. Still, the camera has to follow.

For its P8 Lite 2017, the manufacturer has chosen a 12 megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture, LED flash and phase-detection autofocus. The phone is rather pleasant to use, with the possibility to use the slice buttons to capture the shots.

If the weather is not kind, the camera struggles a little to capture light with its 1.25 µm photosites and despite its correct aperture f/2.0. In backlighting and cloudy weather, HDR mode remains the simplest solution. You can also get your hands on Pro Photo mode, which gives you more control over aperture, exposure, ISO, and white balance.

At night, the Huawei P8 Lite’s sensor performs well, with smoothing present, but good overall noise management. Keeping in mind that this is a phone for less than 250€, the rendering is quite correct.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Autonomy and Recharging

In terms of endurance, the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 has evolved in the right direction compared to its big brother. Thus, we go from a battery of 2200 mAh to 3000 mAh. Add to this a less energy-intensive SoC, an ever more optimized OS, and you get very good results. Autonomy is clearly one of the strong points of this P8 Lite 2017.

After a big day of testing alternating 4G and Wi-Fi, 25 minutes of Real Racing 3, 1h30 of YouTube video playback, a bit of social networking and quite a bit of web browsing, the P8 Lite 2017 made it from 7:30am to 10pm, when it had 35% battery life. The screen brightness was set to automatic throughout the day.

By setting the plane mode for the night, we managed to drag it through until mid-morning the next day. At 13% battery power, it then displayed 5 hours and 40 minutes with the screen on, without ever having used one of the energy saving modes. If you don’t consume too much gaming and video, you can count on a day and a half of autonomy without any problem.

One of the big weak points of this Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is the very long charging time of the phone. With only 5 watts, the charger takes a very long time to restore the battery to life. Starting with 13% battery power, the P8 Lite 2017 recharged by only +28% in 30 minutes and +36% in one hour. Count 2h30 for a full 100% refill.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017: Prices and Availability

The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 has been available since the end of January at the recommended retail price of €249 in black, white or gold. If the first P8 Lite of the name is doomed to disappear, you can still find it at the time we write its lines around 165€ in unlocked version.

Our Verdict

The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is the worthy successor to the P8 Lite, which will be able to retire after almost two years on the market. Here the brand offers a smartphone that follows in the footsteps of its big brother by seeking the best possible value for money, which it manages to do without too much difficulty.

Its differences from the P9 are minimal and it simply stands out from an Honor 6X by its simple photo sensor and more compact dimensions. Then why release such a model? Huawei’s objective here is to offer a replacement for its best-selling model, which, by keeping the same name, aims to convince those who liked the first model, and reassure dealers and operators about the dynamics of the P range.

While the phone’s graphics performance, limited storage capacity and slow recharge are regrettable, the P8 Lite 2017 remains a very balanced phone with no fatal flaws that should convince anyone looking for a simple and efficient smartphone for everyday use.

We recommend the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 to anyone looking for a phone with good value for money. With a good screen, neat design, solid battery life and the latest version of Android and Huawei interface, this P8 Lite 2017 is just what you need. A sure value in this price range.
