Tesla Guide: Understanding the Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X ranges

Tesla has an ever-changing catalog. Prices, options, packs, Autopilot, autonomy… We’ll help you see more clearly with this comprehensive guide to the Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X.

For several years now, the electric car segment has been living at the pace of Tesla’s announcements, which change its catalogue very regularly – it was the manufacturer’s wish to keep all models up to date and to drive prices down. The marketing of a more affordable Model 3, the car that takes Tesla out of the top end, has once again reshuffled the cards.

Disappearance of models, name changes, removal of options, equipment modifications, price revisions… From one month to the next, the Model 3, Model S, Model Y and Model X ranges are turned upside down. And since Tesla often changes its business policy, it’s time to clarify what you can really buy and, more importantly, how much.

Initially different, the configurators of the Model S and Model X ended up taking over the interface of those of the Model Y and Model 3. Good for readability and ergonomics.

Since 1 January 2020, the ecological bonus has been reduced. From now on, only cars sold for less than EUR 45,000 will receive a discount of EUR 6,000. It falls to EUR 3,000 for those whose fare is between EUR 45,000 and EUR 60,000. Beyond that, there’s nothing left. This means that only certain versions of the Model 3 are affected by the 3,000 euro bonus, provided that you are not greedy on options.

The prices displayed in this guide no longer take into account the ecological bonus.

Versions

In Europe, the Model 3 was first offered in its most expensive versions. But Tesla was quick to add a cheaper variation. Today, the following models are on the market: the Model 3 Standard Plus (49,600 euros), the Model 3 four-wheel drive with a large battery (59,000 euros) and the Model 3 Performance (64,890 euros). It’s the same catalogue as in the United States

Exterior personalization

As standard, the Model 3 is available in multi-layer pearlescent white. But you can opt for another colour for 1,050 euros (plain black, night grey metallic or ultramarine blue metallic) or 2,100 euros (multi-layer red).

As for the rims, the 18-inch rims can be replaced by 19-inch Sport ones (+ 1600 euros). The Model 3 Performance gets special treatment with a free sports package that includes 20-inch wheels, Performance brakes, carbon fiber spoiler, aluminum crankset and track mode. All of these options are exclusive to the Model 3 Performance and cannot be chosen a la carte.

It is also possible to add a towing hook on standard models. For 1,070 euros, it can tow up to 910 kilograms (attention: it cannot be installed after delivery).

Personalization of the interior

The interior of the Model 3 is well-equipped with heated leather seats, premium audio system, glass roof and premium connectivity (for one year). If you feel like it, you can go from black to white for 1,050 euros.

A small clarification, however: the interior described as premium is associated with the most expensive Model 3s. For example, the Model 3 Standard Plus, with a partial premium interior, is a little less well equipped.

The partial Premium interior includes :

  • Heated front seats, electric and 12-way adjustable ;
  • Premium upholstery and finishing ;
  • Audio system with immersive sound ;
  • Standard charts and navigation ;
  • LED fog lights ;
  • Central console with storage space 4 USB ports and docking stations for 2 smartphones.

The Premium interior includes :

  • Heated seats and 12-way power front seats ;
  • High-end audio system – 14 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 amplifiers and immersive sound ;
  • Satellite maps with real time traffic visualisation ;
  • Multimedia library accessible by streaming ;
  • Internet Browser ;
  • Automatic garage door opening via geolocation ;
  • LED fog lights ;
  • Central console with storage space 4 USB ports and docking stations for 2 smartphones.

All interiors include :

  • Tinted glass roof with infrared and ultraviolet protection ;
  • Heated, electrically folding and dimming rearview mirrors ;
  • Music and media accessible via Bluetooth ;
  • Customized conductor profiles.

Autopilot

On April 11, 2019, Tesla decided to make the Autopilot a standard feature, meaning that it is integrated into all models. This is the old basic package corresponding to the first level of assistance (braking, acceleration and steering in some cases). The second level, called ‘Full Automatic Driving Capability’, adds automatic parking, Navigate on Autopilot (an option that already allows the car to drive alone on certain sections of expressways, from entry to exit, in the United States and soon in Europe) and future improvements (e.g. automatic city driving and detection of lights and signs). It is offered as an option at EUR 6 300.

For a long time Tesla differentiated its Model S with a number indicating the battery capacity. This is no longer the case and the manufacturer has finally adopted the nomenclature of the Model 3. No more 75D, 100D, P100D and hello the Model S High Autonomy and Performance.

Standard on the Model S are four-wheel drive cars with a premium interior. If you decide to put in more money, it’s because you want more performance.
