As one of the most popular consoles on the market, game releases and hardware upgrades are always followed closely by eager gamers. And now that Steam is gearing up for its next big in-home upgrade with an updated console this fall, iFixit has released a list of replacement parts you can use to get your old system back into shape.

Image courtesy of ValveAfter the Steam Deck’s official release, Valve has stated that replacement components would be available via iFixit, making it easy for clumsy or unlucky owners to return their systems to their previous states and intended usefulness.
The agreement with iFixit, as mentioned in a recent blog post by Valve, fulfills the company’s prior pledge of making steam deck replacement components accessible for purchase. Replacement components for Valve’s VR headgear, the Valve Index will be accessible via the how-to website’s parts shop, which currently sells parts for iPhones and Xbox systems.
iFixit’s disassembly of the Steam Deck, which was revealed today on YouTube, complements Valve’s announcement. Due to certain issues, such as a difficult-to-remove battery, the system got a 7 out of 10 on iFixit’s repairability rating.

Everything Valve Said Not to Do in a Steam Deck Teardown! (iFixIt)
- The Steam Deck is a joy to use since it is so simple to open. If you’re accustomed to working on computers, you’ll feel right at home here: just unscrew eight Phillips screws, peel away some plastic clips, and you’re in—no messy adhesives, no unusual screws. This is the epitome of simplicity.
- We do have a few major complaints: the battery is a squandered opportunity, and a more modular charging port would have been preferable. […] To avoid thermal runaway, we recommend draining the battery below 25% before beginning, and then using enough of heat to soften the glue and pull it out mostly from the bottom edge. Just keep an eye out for antenna hardware.
- We did, however, find a lot to enjoy. The opening technique is quick and uncomplicated; most components have above-average modularity; and all repairs need just one Phillips screwdriver. And the storage arrangement here outperforms many modern laptops. On our repairability rating, the Steam Deck receives a 7 out of 10.
