Six Dragon Quest Projects Announced –

As a Dragon Quest fan, I am always delighted to hear about any new projects in the series. This week, Square Enix shared six upcoming projects at the Dragon Quest Summer Festival 2017. The first is Dragon Quest X, which has been available on the Nintendo Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS. It is set to launch for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan this August. The second game is the Dragon Quest XI for the Nintendo 3DS. It will launch in 2018. The third project is Dragon Quest Builders 2. It will launch on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. As part of Square Enix’s commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series, six Dragon Quest projects were announced, including a 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VIII, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 for the 3DS, and Dragon Quest of the Stars for mobiles. The projects will span the Nintendo 3DS, mobile phones, and PC platforms, and will be released over the course of three years.

Square Enix has opened the floodgates and let loose an impressive wave of Dragon Quest news. The big reveal is a new adventure game, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. It’s the big mainline numbered sequel to Dragon Quest X, and will be coming to Playstation 4 and Steam. In other big news, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, a remake of the Nintendo DS game, is coming to Android and iOS in the West, and Square Enix is making a new smartphone game called Dragon Quest of the Stars. Rounding out the list of announced projects are Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 and Dragon Quest Heroes II.

Enix aired a stream celebrating the 35th anniversary of Dragon Quest, announcing six games at the beginning of the show. They’ve reached that number, but only three of the six games are likely to be worth the attention of American players. Because the first announcement was about the sixth version of Dragon Quest X (an online MMORPG), which will be released in Japan this fall. Unfortunately, they still refuse to locate this movie, but it was great! The new puzzle game Dragon Quest, in which you must match erasers with identical characters to destroy monsters, will also be available on mobile devices. This one looked cute and could be a fun hobby. It looks like it will be released worldwide as a free mobile game later this year. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Square Enix will decide to release the next game, which is very intriguing: Dragon Quest X Offline. Yeah, offline. They take the story out of the online game and transform it for fans to play offline, with fully updated chibi-style graphics. I mean, if we can’t get the real one, maybe they’ll consider bringing it here? They haven’t made any promises, so I doubt it. Let’s move on to the games that have been announced for worldwide release! Dragon Quest Treasures is a new installment of the franchise featuring Eric and Mia from Dragon Quest XI. They play as their young friends who travel the world in search of treasure. Yuji Horii says the game is still an RPG, but it doesn’t feel like a typical Dragon Quest game. The game looks great and will be released simultaneously worldwide. What platforms, you ask? Your guess is as good as mine, but if I had to make a guess, I would definitely say Switch. Although I was excited and looking forward to the inevitable announcement of Dragon Quest XII (see next paragraph), it was Dragon Quest III HD-2D that really thrilled me. For those who don’t know: Dragon Warrior III was my favorite game in the series on the NES, and this remake is absolutely amazing. It uses the same graphics technology as Octopath Traveller and looks fantastic in the Dragon Quest world. The film is expected to be released in theaters worldwide, but no release date has been announced yet. I would love to play this game again! The last announcement was about Dragon Quest XII, and my fears were justified: They only showed the logo. The game looks darker and perhaps more realistic than previous versions, but it’s hard to say how this will affect the final version of the game. Yuji Horii wouldn’t reveal any details about the game, he only said that they are experimenting with the way they fight and possibly changing the chain of command. No one knows exactly what this means, but given the reluctance to change something as sacred as the combat system, I wouldn’t expect a radical change for fear of outrage from the large fan base in Japan. I’m looking forward to the sequel to the game, which officially bears the subtitle Flames of Fate, and the fact that they’re aiming for a worldwide release is a very welcome change! It seems that this game is still very far away and no platform has been announced yet. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes out in 2023, but that’s just my hunch. I hope it happens sooner! Overall, I had a good time watching the streamer. I’d love to see a remake of Dragon Quest III, and I’m bummed that they still haven’t located Part X. Also, a small snippet of the game XII would have been great to get an idea of what they are doing. Still, it was a fun way to spend an evening, and I’m glad the series will continue and we’ll have something to play in the near future! Yuji Horii was asked questions during the stream and revealed that he hopes to remake Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II with the HD-2D graphics engine. He also seems to have hinted that a new Dragon Quest Monsters is in development and will be different from the recently announced Dragon Quest Treasures.
