CHECK : Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Monsters vs Aliens is not a movie I remember being excited about. Starring Reese Witherspoon, released in 2009, Monsters vs. Aliens to satirize the 1950s B-movies the way Shrek fairy tales and Megamind superhero movies made fun of. This action comedy tells the story of a government that discovers several monsters, such as the 50-year-old woman, the Blob, the fly and the creature from the black lagoon, and brings them together to fight an alien attack. It actually sounds interesting and potentially funny, but I barely remember this movie when I saw it. Let’s see if I went too hard on Monsters vs Aliens.
Monsters vs. Aliens begins with two government employees discovering that a meteor is coming to Earth, more specifically to Modesto, California. The film then introduces us to Susan (Reese Witherspoon), a happy bride-to-be whose life is about to change….. but not in the way she expects. Before the wedding, Susan Derek’s fiancé (Paul Rudd) drops the bomb: instead of their planned honeymoon to Paris, they go straight to Fresno so he can apply to become a weatherman. Susan is not happy to hear this, but that is the least of her problems. Susan was hit by a meteorite on her way to the wedding. She disposes of it, but just as she and Derek are about to exchange their vows, it begins to glow and grow, much to his surprise and disgust. A ruined wedding with terrible guests and a terrible groom is not the end of Susan’s problems. The government kidnaps her and takes her to a secret base where she makes unusual friends. Susan has little time to get used to her new friends, clothes, surroundings and size. The monsters are just gathering or the aliens are attacking Earth. Can the monsters Save The World and defeat the aliens? Will Susan be able to accept her new life and her new body?
Like I said before, I don’t think Monsters vs Aliens is a bad idea for a movie. Susan’s situation leads to some interesting interactions, such as. B. when she finds Derek and tries to explain what happened. He breaks up with her, and not in a nice way, he says something about not being able to stand being in someone else’s shadow, and she gives him a big thumbs up. Susan’s new condition brings out the worst in Derek and reinforces the glaring character flaws he’s always had that she’d rather ignore. Derek is a vain, selfish man who only cares about his career as a meteorologist and expects any potential woman to irresponsibly cater to all his whims. I really love this movie, and I can imagine many people, regardless of gender, can identify with it. I love Susan’s scenes and her struggle to accept what she has become. When she finally confronts Galaxhar (Rainn Wilson), he removes the substance that gave her enormous size and power. Susan literally sees what she has gained from the accident and what she has to lose. It’s interesting to see how someone goes from trying to change themselves to realizing what they have to offer and accepting that.
However, Susan is the only character I like in Monsters vs Aliens and the only one with an engaging storyline. I guess this is a good time to mention that Monsters vs Aliens has a surprisingly impressive cast. Behind Susan Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie as Dr. Cockroach, Seth Rogen as Grandma and Will Arnett as Missing Link form a group of co-opted monsters and insects who can’t talk. Kiefer Sutherland lends his voice to General W.R. Monger (tee-hee), and he’s great in this role. I didn’t even know it was Sutherland, and I was surprised when I discovered it. The voice he does for Monger is well suited to this type of character, it doesn’t sound forced or too ticklish. Stephen Colbert lends his voice to the President of the United States and, frankly, it sounds a lot funnier than the script allows. Rainn Wilson plays Galaxhar, an alien who invades Earth to retrieve the mineral that was in the comet before he met Susan. As previously mentioned, Paul Rudd is fabulously hated by Susan Derek’s ex-fiancée.
But a great cast n’t make great characters. Except for Susan, the other monsters are very monotonous. Susan and Derek are also the only interesting human characters, especially since the others are mostly props. Stupid, incompetent president, general, parent lover, etc. As much as I love Susan, I don’t think she’s strong enough to carry an entire movie by herself. Monsters vs. Aliens was marketed as a team movie, so more was expected about the other monsters and the interpersonal relationships within the group. They try to make Dr. Cockroach and the Missing Link good friends for Susan, but it all comes across as very rushed and forced. B.O.B. and insects can hardly smell anything, so they don’t trust a newborn female. The other monsters aren’t terrible characters, but they’re not very developed or interesting. Many of the human characters are actually pretty bad. The president isn’t as funny as the writers make him out to be, and General Monger doesn’t make much of an impression.
The animation of Monsters vs. Aliens is good. I don’t really like the designs of the characters, especially the male ones. These signs are so ugly! I don’t understand why DreamWorks did this in the 2000s with so many human characters, but it’s not for me. I don’t find the behavior of the President, Derek, Merchant, etc. funny or endearing at all. They’re just unpleasant to look at. The textures and scenery are decent, but not enough to compensate for the character design The original music for the film was written by Henry Jackman. It’s certainly not his best work; I prefer his scores for Wreck-It Ralph and Captain America : Winter Soldier But it’s not bad, and it’s suitable for a movie.
Overall, Monsters vs Aliens is a mixed bag for me. It has a top notch cast and a surprisingly well written main character. The concept of the government collecting scary monsters to fight the aliens also seems very creative. However, the other characters leave a lot to be desired and the animation is not impressive.
