Review – Dark Deity –

I’ve been looking forward to this game for quite some time. It’s a roguelike RPG with a tileset that I’ve always wanted to see in a game, and a soundtrack that I’ve heard many times but never really wished I could listen to in real life. The game features a lot of characters to play with, many of which are recruitable in the final moments. That’s where the game can become difficult, because you have to choose which of your almost-endless party members to risk and save, and which to send into oblivion. It’s a really cool game, but the difficulty curve just could have been more gradual.

In the early afternoon of August 7th, 2014, the universe was broken. A single tear in the fabric of space-time let forth a single drop of blood. From this drop of blood came forth a being. This being was born with a purpose, that purpose was to destroy all life in the universe. And so it did.

Dark Deity, based on the Dark Descent game engine, is a top-down action RPG game with lots of weapons, magic, and a brutal combat system. You play the role of an immortal being with access to magic. Fire Emblem, for example, has generated a plethora of clones throughout the years. Some are excellent, while others are less so. These clones, for the most part, don’t add anything new to the table, making them a complete rip-off. Dark Deity, on the other hand, is the most recent to appear. Dark Deity offers a variety of terrains, unit classes, and more to explore, aiming to put the focus back to the original gameplay style more than even Fire Emblem Three Houses was able to do.

Dark Deity is a turn-based strategy game in which the player moves each of their troops across a gridded board separately. The addition of perma-death, which means that if one of your troops dies, that’s it, is the distinguishing feature of these types of games. Every action had ramifications, and every risk you made had the potential to backfire spectacularly.

Perma-death is not present in Dark Deity, on the other hand. While it is sad when a unit dies in a chapter, and while that unit does get a debuff for the following chapter, putting your characters in danger is almost casual. There is no urge to learn about or get acquainted with the personalities since they are not in danger. That, and the characters and personalities aren’t very appealing. Everyone is a diluted version of a Fire Emblem character from the first or second Game Boy Advance game.

They won’t notice us if we all turn our heads aside.

A camp greets you between each chapter. You may upgrade your weapons here to boost your attack power, critical hit chance, and even add new powers to the weapon (and change its name). I think this is a better method than having to purchase and carry a weapon for each character. No, I don’t want my General carrying an axe, a sword, and a lance, along with a key if there’s a door, and anything else.

Even though they just wield swords, each character has a range of weaponry. One will strike powerfully, while another will have a high probability of making a critical hit, and the third will be weaker but lighter and quicker, allowing it to potentially hit twice. The attack animations are very beautiful, especially when you strike twice. Rather of striking an opponent once for twenty health points, certain characters may strike twice for a total of 10 hit points. While it may not seem to be much, the diversity in how troops strike helps to keep the combat animations interesting without requiring any major modifications.

Why not have a scoreboard for your team?

On the subject of animations, the character sprites resemble reminiscent of the original Fire Emblem, but with a contemporary twist. The sprites are all smoothed out beautifully instead of being pixel art. The fact that all of the sprites face left when on the field is a little off-putting. If you start on the left, everyone marches backwards into combat! Is it possible that it’s a kind of intimidation? The song is a little out of left field on the note of left. Nothing really energizing, and the music isn’t exactly “hype” stuff. It’s lovely, and it works well in places like the camp or with less significant conversation, but not in the midst of a city attack.

There is no glamping here, but it is a good basic camp.

Dark Deity took away some of the most essential aspects of what makes these game genres so popular. While the game is enjoyable in and of itself, if you’re searching for something to fill the need left by Three Houses, Dark Deity may be the answer. If you’re hoping for the original, difficult-to-master-you-might-need-to-restart-the-game difficulties that the first Fire Emblem games instilled in you, Dark Deity falls short.


While Dark Deity is attractive, it does not strike out as particularly noteworthy.

This is a fantastic Fire Emblem clone. It would really stand out as one of the greatest, perhaps even better than the original, if it included more fresh ideas.

Some great music and sound effects, however they don’t always match what’s going on in the game.

It’s a fun clone that’s stable and plays well. This would truly break out from the Fire Emblem shadow if there was more that felt fresh, rather than simply feeling like I could take out my GBA.
