The Resident Evil 4 HD Project, a mod for the fourth installment of Capcom’s iconic survival horror series, was released on PC today. The project has been in development since 2008 when it began as a fan-made remastering that sought to update and improve upon gameplay elements while preserving the feel and atmosphere of what made RE4 great. It became an official remake back in 2015 with its release coming later this year.

Resident Evil 4 HD Project, an eight-year-in-the-making remaster mod for survival horror fans searching for more incentive to play Shinji Mikami’s last and highly acclaimed Resident Evil game, has finally been published. The update, which was first unveiled in February 2014, adds new graphics, a higher-resolution UI, widescreen compatibility, and more to the Steam version of the original 2005 classic. Highlights (from the FAQ for Resident Evil 4 HD):
- Capcom obtained texture materials for the original game by shooting a range of real-world places, notably around Spain and Wales. Albert returned to these same places for this project to collect better quality assets. As a consequence, players may enjoy a visual experience that is as close to the original game as possible, with resolutions up to 16 times higher.
- We took each texture and scaled it up to 8-16 times the original resolution (in most instances) before redrawing / recreating it. Furthermore, Albert has been able to locate the original source materials in many cases, allowing us to authentically reproduce the original purpose at a much greater quality.
- The goal of the project is to stay loyal to the original images and creative purpose throughout. The nicest type of feedback we get is when people remark the game looks exactly like what they anticipated it would look like 10 years ago when they first played it. While we aren’t flawless, we make frequent reference to the original texture assets to guarantee we don’t go too far.
Resident Evil 4 HD remaster mod is currently available (Rock Paper Shotgun):
- It’s revised the Assignment: Ada and Separate Ways additional campaigns, as well as the arcade-y Mercenaries mode, in addition to the main narrative campaign.
- It also (optionally) restores visual features such as depth-of-field blur, which was available in the initial release but has been removed in subsequent versions.
- What’s more striking is that the developers are driven by the original game’s appearance throughout. […] This is partly due to the fact that the crew has located many of the sites and things that Capcom utilized as the basis for some of the game’s graphics.
