Today from π1, a new Raspberry Pi is available ! The Pi 3 Model B+ is an improved version of the Pi 3, a miniature computer released two years ago. The shape does not change, this is important to keep the ecosystem in place and in particular to ensure that the housings designed for the device remain compatible. The price n’t change either, you still have to count 35 $ officially and around 40 € in France.
This version improves the original model in several ways. First of all, the processor is slightly faster, with a frequency of 1.4 GHz compared to 1.2 GHz before. Other features do not change, it is still a four-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor and performance is not expected to change significantly. Optimizations have reduced power consumption and heat output with equal frequency, but its designers warn that this model consumes more power than previous models.
On the other hand, connection to the local network and the Internet promises to be faster thanks to the switch to WiFi 802.11ac, the latest standard that allows speeds of up to three times higher. Bluetooth 4.1 gives way to 4.2, and the Ethernet ports switch to Gigabit (actually Gigabit Ethernet via USB 2.0 internally). And this “nanocomputer” can now be powered using Ethernet, provided it has a PoE-compatible source.
