Microsoft’s Project xCloud is beginning to take shape and real-world testing is expected in 2019. The “Netflix of video games” as the American group calls it, will offer a catalogue of games available in streaming and cloud gaming on any device, even a smartphone.
Microsoft is gradually advancing on its Project xCloud streaming service announced in October 2018. At an event at its Redmond headquarters to which publishers were invited, Satya Nadella, the group’s CEO, explained to an audience of journalists that “we describe it, in short, as the Netflix of video games”, reports Business Insider. The principle is simple: thanks to streaming, you can play a resource-hungry video game on any device, such as an Xbox, a PC with little equipment or even a smartphone.
Microsoft’s Project xCloud will take shape in 2019
An ambitious project reminiscent of the French company Shadow’s proposal for the PC of the future in the cloud. The promise is attractive and with the means of the American giant, the concept could even go much further. In any case, we’re not afraid of the madness of grandeur across the Atlantic: Microsoft wants to bring together 2 billion players with cloud gaming, just that.
In short, the game you want to access is launched on a powerful computer that can be located anywhere in the world. Your own device, whatever it is, is only used to stream content. So no more need to invest in the latest graphics card or heavy or expensive equipment to play the most demanding productions. The main obstacle to this technology is the need to have a perfect internet connection at home. This is why the arrival of the 5G network is eagerly awaited.
Netflix for video games also means catalogue. That’s what Shadow lacks, which only offers a cloud gaming feature, the player having to install his own games afterwards. However, Microsoft already has experience in this area with the Xbox Game Pass, which contains exclusive Microsoft games as well as other titles. An increasingly interesting service that is now available on PCs and allows access to more than a hundred games by paying a monthly subscription. Project xCloud will begin to be tested in real-world conditions starting in 2019, and could well turn the video game market upside down. As much as Netflix did for television?
