Preston North End 0-1 Watford: Joao Pedro penalty gives Hornets win

Joao Pedro (left) scores his seventh goal of the season.

Promotion-chasing Watford maintained their momentum with a brief win over Preston North End in the Championship.

Brazilian striker Joao Pedro scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot six minutes into the second half after being brought down by Tom Barhuizen.

Liam Lindsay fired a corner behind the bar as the Lilywhites tried to equalise, but visiting goalkeeper Daniel Bachman could not prevent the hosts from scoring.

The victory moves Xisco Munoz’s team up to third in the standings, three points behind Brentford, who are in second place.

However, the Bees and fourth-placed Swansea City, who are a point behind the Hornets and have played three games less at Vicarage Road, will be in action on Wednesday night.

Watford won 6-0 over Bristol City on Saturday, but the trip to Deepdale proved to be a tricky one, decided by one try in the match.

There were few chances in the first half. Preston striker Chad Evans shot over the bar from close range in the first 20 minutes and sent another shot into the goal from an acute angle.

The Hornets’ talisman Troy Deeney had briefly recovered from injury and Pedro was awarded a penalty kick early in the second half after referee Tony Harrington gave him the slip.

The 19-year-old scored his seventh goal of the season from the left, despite a diving header from Preston goalkeeper Daniel Iversen in the right direction.

It was only Watford’s eighth away goal in 15 league games this season and it was enough for their fourth away win.

Alex Neil’s Preston have lost three of their last four games and remain seven points clear of the play-off zone. They suffered their first home defeat against Watford since 1979.
