Olympiakos 1-3 Arsenal: Gunners take commanding first-leg lead in Europa League last-16 tie

Odegaard’s final goal is 13th place. February 2020 for Real Sociedad.

Mikel Arteta believes his Arsenal should stop being their worst opponents after defensive errors ruined their last Europa League victory over Olympiacos in the first round of 16.

Martin Odegaard’s opening goal set the tone for victory, but the usual defensive setbacks put the Greek champions behind and made things difficult for them, until late goals from Gabriel and Mohamed Elneny tipped the game in Arsenal’s favour.

We need to be very clear and honest with ourselves. We gave the opponent three chances, they took one, and at this level they punish you, Artema said.

If we want to get to the next level, we have to stop that and be more ruthless and if we dominate that, we will kill games.

Poor passes from David Luiz and Odegaard went unpunished, but Arsenal were not so lucky when Bernd Leno embarrassed substitute Dani Ceballos and Yousef El Arabi scored the equaliser.

It joined a list of recent mistakes that saw Arsenal concede easy goals in games against Burnley and Benfica last month.

The goals and chances we gave up came from ourselves, Arteta added.

It’s a positive thing, because when you stop, you’re stronger. The reality is that we need to end this situation now. That’s my responsibility. I let them play the way we want them to play, knowing the risk and reward.

Fortunately for Arteta, this means his side are in a good position to avoid a repeat of last season’s dramatic elimination at Olympiacos with three costly goals against.

All in all, he too will be pleased with a game in which Arsenal took the lead thanks to a powerful shot from 20 yards by Odegaard.

The Norwegian midfielder could and should have opened the scoring earlier when he deflected a shot off his left foot. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was also denied a goal when goalkeeper Jose Sa rebounded his header against the bar.

And although the Gunners failed to win the match, their determination was evident at the Karaiskakis Stadium for the second time in less than a month.

With 12 minutes to go, El Araby missed the chance to give the hosts the lead. Gabriel outpaced his counterpart and headed in Willian’s right corner, and Elneny’s late goal made the final score deserved.

Anything can happen – what they said.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in conversation with BT Sport: We started the game very well, we really dominated and created a lot of chances.

We gave them a goal when we tried to come back from a deficit, but then we responded well and scored two more goals. Overall it’s a very positive result, but we need to stop making mistakes that cost us goals, because we can’t go on like this.

It’s a break, and anything can happen. We concentrate hard and start the second leg at 0-0 trying to win the match.
