New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman not on hot seat but it’s time for team to win, co-owner John Mara says

The Giants are sitting at 5-9 record. The biggest problem? The team has lost its top two wide receivers, and have no depth at running back, while having to rely on a backup quarterback. Fans are calling for the head of Gettleman, and the co-owner is fed up.

New York Giants co-owner John Mara is going to be pretty bold with his comments with regards to the Giants future.

The New York Giants are on the brink of a significant rebuild, and despite the current GM and his job security, the situation is starting to look a lot less like a target that needs to be put on the back of Dave Gettleman.. Read more about ny giants super bowl and let us know what you think.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants co-owner John Mara thinks this is a pivotal year for the team. It doesn’t necessarily imply that general manager Dave Gettleman is in jeopardy.

Rather, the whole company should be put on notice.

“We’re all on the hot seat, especially with our fans,” Mara said in his State of the Giants speech on Tuesday. “They’ve had far too many losing seasons as a result of our actions. It’s past time for us to begin winning again. But I wouldn’t say [Gettleman is under investigation]. That is not an accurate statement, in my opinion.”

In the three seasons since Gettleman came over as general manager, the Giants have won 15 games. Last year, they were in contention for the NFC East championship going into the final week, thanks in part to the division’s problems.

This summer, Gettleman was a free agent, and he had a third-year quarterback in Daniel Jones, whom he selected sixth overall. In a recent interview, he admitted that 2017 was a pivotal year for Jones, but it was “saying the obvious.”

That seems to be the case with Gettleman as well.

“Well, I believe it’s the same across the board,” Mara replied. “I’d want to see us improve and become a winning team once again. We’ve been waiting a long time for it, and we’ve spent a lot of money on free agency. We’ve had a number of very good drafts, and now it’s time to put them to the test on the field.”

This squad, according to Mara, is expected to contend for a postseason place this season. He is certain that they are on the right track.

That’s why there was never a real discussion about replacing Gettleman at the conclusion of the season. In their first year together, the Giants’ management appreciated the way he worked with coach Joe Judge.

But it has to lead to victories and Super Bowl contention at some time. Those are the benchmarks. Mara has left it up to you to figure out what it means for this season. At the conclusion of the season, ownership will make a decision based on their gut feeling and the facts.

Since becoming GM, Gettleman has accomplished a number of other things, according to him.

He stated Tuesday, “Objectively speaking, I don’t put that type of victory total, a figure on it.” “We’ve accomplished a lot. I have a strong feeling that I adore Joe and the method that he and I introduced. We’ve put in a lot of effort not just on-the-field but also off-the-field since I arrived. Our football operation and how we function have undergone significant adjustments.

“Really and honestly, my objective when I came here was to build this team up, both on and off the field; that has been my goal, and I feel like we’ve accomplished that, and I’m eager to see what happens on the field this year.”

The Giants are hopeful that this includes running back Saquon Barkley, who is currently restricted in practice after tearing his ACL last season. In the last two seasons, he has missed a total of 17 games.

However, Gettleman remains optimistic about the great running back he drafted second overall in the 2018 NFL draft.

“I honestly and really would not make a different choice now than I did last year,” Gettleman said. “It’s just plain and straightforward.”

Barkley is entering the last year of his rookie contract. His fifth-year option for 2022 was picked up by the Giants following year. Before addressing Barkley’s contract, Mara wants to see him perform on the field.

Before deciding that Jones is their franchise quarterback going forward, the Giants want to see more concrete improvement.

“Obviously, we want it, and we need to see more victories,” Mara added, “but I have a lot of faith in Daniel.” “The way the coaches in this facility feel about him is one of the things that gives me that confidence. He is adored by them. They adore him in every way; all we have to do now is win some games. Everything I see on the field with him appeals to me. I like his leadership, as well as his work ethic and how the players react to him. Now all we have to do is win some games.”

Jones had nothing to do with the Giants’ trade in the first round of this year’s draft, which earned them another first-round selection in 2022, according to Gettleman. In exchange for the 11th overall pick, they received the first-rounder and pick No. 20 from the Chicago Bears.

It wasn’t so much an indictment of Jones as it was about providing value.

“There wasn’t even a thought. No, not at all “According to Gettleman. “We trust in Daniel and are looking forward to seeing what he can do in his second year in the system.”

Still, now is the moment for everyone, from the general manager to the quarterback to the star running back, to deliver. Mara and the Giants have had a difficult season. In the last nine years, they’ve only had one winning season.

They haven’t gotten the outcomes they desired in recent years.

“I’d say that’s an understatement,” Mara said. “On paper, I believe we are a lot better. I’d want to see us put it on display right now on the field, winning more games and making the playoffs. It is, that is my anticipation every year when the season begins. Obviously, we’ve fallen well short of that over the past four years, but I’m happy with where we’re at on paper, but I’d want to see us win some games.”
