The duo of D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have been released from their obligations to HBO, which broadcast Game of Thrones, and have now joined the Netflixescrow.
It’s quite a catch for the American streaming giant, which has signed a exclusive contract for new series and films (plural, yes) to add to its thick catalogue.
The duo thus joins the Netflixteam, which has already been filled these last months with prestigious occupants with the producer Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy) and Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story).
It’s that both men are coveted. Since the last episode of Game of Thrones aired last May, D.B Weiss and David Benioff have been courted by all SVoD services and all of Uncle Sam’s cable channels – who are eager to replicate the global success of Game of Thrones.
“They are a creative force and have delighted audiences around the world with theirstorytelling,” writes Ted Sarandos, content manager at Netflix about his new foals. “We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to oursubscribers”.
For their part, the interested parties praise the Netflix philosophy, which they therefore preferred to Amazon, Disney, Apple and most probably HBO, which, one can imagine, would have liked to keep its chickens with golden eggs. “We’ve had a great track record with HBO for over a decade and are grateful to all the people who have made us feel like ahousehold,” said D.B. Weiss and David Benioff in a statement. “Netflix has built something amazing and unprecedented, and we are honored that they have invited us to join them;”.
Even before the end of Game of Thrones, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff had made it official that they would work with Disney on the next episodes of Star Wars, spread over the next decade. But since the end of their star series, their role has become clearer: the Star Wars of 2022 will be written by the two companions.
One foot in Disney, one foot in Netflix… And another little toe at HBO because, as we remember, Weiss and Benioff had signed with their historical broadcaster for a new series in 2017. Uchronic, it was to tell the story of an alternative America in which the Confederates would have won the American Civil War. Only the subject, extremely sensitive in the United States, especially in the southern states, had created a lot of turmoil, so much so that some people doubted that the series would ever see the light of day.
The present exclusivity agreement signed with Netflix confirms the termination of the project. The two producers have a very busy schedule, especially since they are still the target of sharp criticism concerning the end of Game of Thrones , which they are suspected of having botched in order to get to work on their future projects as soon as possible.
