Which Free Mobile no obligation plan should I choose?

In the mobile phone rate plan market, Free Mobile’s offer initially played the role of an electroshock. Today, and in the face of fierce competition, the operator is wiser, but still has a lot to offer.

60 GB Free Mobile Bundle

Mobile Package: a Comparison of the Best Offers in 2020

Free has recently changed its approach and added to its very simplified catalogue a calling package, at €9.99 for one year, a sort of intermediary between its two historical offers.

Why does Clubic recommend this Free package?

  • The cheapest price on the market for the first year
  • A mobile package with no commitment
  • Good network coverage in France

Calls

This 60 GB package is a “light” version of the “classic” Free package, at €19.99. So, if the calls remain unlimited:

  • To mobiles and fixed lines in mainland France and overseas departments (excluding Mayotte)
  • From Europe and the French Overseas Departments to landlines and mobiles in Europe, the French Overseas Departments and Metropolitan France

On the other hand, calls to landlines in 100 destinations and mobiles in North America are reserved for the €19.99 package.

SMS/MMS

SMS are unlimited in France (and to the DOM for SMS), and from Europe and the DOM (to mainland France, the DOM and Europe).

Internet

The 60 GB envelope can be used in metropolitan France on 4G/4G+ networks. This is important because if your smartphone is not compatible, the data plan is reduced to only 3 GB. Of these 60 GB, four can be used from Europe and the French overseas departments, this time on the 3G network. Beyond that, you’ll have to pay 54 cents per MB.

The SIM card

A fee of 10€ for a triple card (SIM, micro, nano) pre-cut, to be paid with the order.

The little extras

At Free Mobile, visual messaging is included, as well as dual calling or call and SMS filtering.

Conditions

This offer is reserved for people who have not taken out a Free Mobile subscription in the 30 days preceding the subscription request and who are at least regular residents of mainland France. The monthly fee of €8.99 is only valid for one year. Then, the €19.99 rate applies, as well as the services specific to this package (100 GB data envelope, extended calls to mobiles in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, China and French overseas departments and landlines to 100 destinations, 25 GB data envelope abroad, etc.).

Termination

Request to be made by mail with acknowledgement of receipt to the address communicated by the voice server (3244, choice “information on the cancellation of your subscription”).

Free Mobile Plan 50 MB

Mobile Package: a Comparison of the Best Offers in 2020

Since its arrival on the market, Free Mobile has been offering a €2/month package that is even free for Freebox subscribers (under certain conditions).

Calls

2 hours of calls from metropolitan France to mobiles in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, China and the French Overseas Departments and Territories and to landlines in 100 destinations. From Europe and the French Overseas Departments to landlines and mobiles in mainland France, Europe and the French Overseas Departments.

After these two hours, each minute will cost you 5 cents for calls to landlines and mobiles in mainland France, and from Europe or the DOM to the mainland, the DOM or Europe. For calls to other destinations, rates vary, but beware: many countries will cost you 1.35 euro per minute.

SMS/MMS

Unlimited in France and in the DOM, and from Europe (to mainland France, the DOM and Europe).

Internet

A 50 Mb envelope to be used in metropolitan France, and a second one (always 50 Mb) to be used from Europe and DOM. If you exceed this quota, it will cost you 5 cents per MB.

The SIM card

A fee of 10€ for a triple card (SIM, micro, nano) pre-cut, to be paid with the order.

The little extras

At Free Mobile, visual messaging is included, as well as dual calling or call and SMS filtering. Beware of the International or “Travel” options: they are certainly free of charge, which is not the case for the calls to and from abroad that they authorize… Even though Free has set threshold amounts above which you are alerted as to your consumption (without cutting off your communications), you should consult Free Mobile’s price list before activating these options.

Conditions

The rate of 0 euro is reserved for Freebox subscribers. If you cancel your subscription, the price goes back to 2€ per month. Moreover, and for the same subscriber, it is the most advantageous reduction that takes place. In other words, if you already have a Free package at €15.99, you will have to pay €2 instead of €0. Finally, a Freebox subscription gives you access to four discounts of up to €4.

Termination

The request is to be made by mail with acknowledgement of receipt to the address communicated by the voice server (3244, choice “information on the cancellation of your subscription”).

Free 100 GB package

Mobile Package: a Comparison of the Best Offers in 2020

With RED by SFR, Free is the only one of the four main players in the French market to offer a package with 100 GB of data. Better still, this limit ceases to exist for Freebox subscribers, who are also offered a €4 discount.

Calls

Calls are unlimited:

  • From mainland France to mobiles in mainland France and the French overseas departments (excluding Mayotte), the United States, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and China, and to landlines in mainland France and 100 other destinations.
  • From Europe and the French Overseas Departments to landlines and mobiles in Europe, the French Overseas Departments and Metropolitan France
  • From the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Israel to landlines and mobiles in the same country and metropolitan France.

SMS/MMS

Unlimited in mainland France (and to the DOM for SMS), and from Europe and the DOM (to mainland France, the DOM and Europe). If you are in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Israel, SMS and MMS messages are also unlimited to mobiles in the same country and metropolitan France.

Internet

If you are a Freebox subscriber, your data envelope is unlimited in 4G/4G+, but “restricted” to 100 GB on the 3G network. If you use a non 4G/4G+ compatible smartphone, the difference between 4G and 3G network is more significant since on the latter, your data quota will be limited to only 3 small GB. From Europe, French overseas departments, Switzerland, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Algeria, Tunisia, Israel, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, Montenegro, Belarus, Macedonia, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and China (excluding Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau), you benefit from a flat rate of 25 GB of data, taken from your overall package. Beyond that, you will have to pay 54 centimes per MB from Europe and the DOM, the other rates depend on the country (see the price list).

The SIM card

A fee of 10€ for a triple card (SIM, micro, nano) pre-cut, to be paid with the order.

The little extras

At Free Mobile, voicemail is included, as well as dual calling or call and SMS filtering.

Conditions

This offer is reserved for people who have not taken out a Free Mobile subscription in the 30 days preceding the subscription request and who are at least regular residents of mainland France.

Termination

Request to be made by mail with acknowledgement of receipt to the address communicated by the voice server (3244, choice “information on the cancellation of your subscription”).

All about Free Mobile

The grain of sand

Free Mobile occupies a special place in the panel of the four major French mobile network operators. Its resounding irruption on the market of no-commitment packages in 2011 has sounded the death knell for overpriced packages! There is a before and an after Free: thanks to Free and in the space of just three years, the average monthly bill for French people has gone from €25 in 2011 to €16 in 2014 (ARCEP data).

As a bonus, Free offers preferential rates for its Freebox subscribers. If this is your case, the 100 GB package (actually unlimited for Freebox subscribers) goes from €19.99 to €15.99/month. As for the 50 Mb package at 2€, it becomes free!

Growing customer service

As far as customer service is concerned, Free is rather complete: in addition to the online support platform, it offers free telephone technical assistance from your Free line. The operator is accessible from its shops, the Free Centers, which are present in some fifty cities in France. Despite these efforts, Free attracts quite a lot of criticism from users, the fault being a deficient 4G coverage.

A cover to be improved

After more than seven years of existence, the Free Mobile network is still well behind its competitors. Its coverage of French territory reveals too many holes in the mesh: the group declared 11,000 4G relay antennas in 2018, 5,000 fewer than its nearest competitor.

While voice and SMS coverage is adequate, it is 4G that generates the most frustration. According to ARCEP, it would reach 88% of the population, or 60% of the territory in metropolitan France. That said, many users report connection problems even in large cities.

Even when it picks up, the quality of Web browsing is questioned. In 4G, in living spaces, only 57% of web pages are displayed in less than 10 seconds, and 54% of 2-minute videos are reproduced in perfect quality. This is significantly less than Orange, which scores 88% and 84% respectively. On the move, the same is true: it is difficult to capture 4G continuously on public transport or on the road network.

To ensure a decent service for its subscribers, Free has signed a roaming agreement with Orange. In the absence of a 3G/4G network, the latter takes over by providing a flanged throughput of less than 1 MB/second. Free also enables its customers to connect to FreeWifi, the network of hotspots for Freebox subscribers.

Above all, Free Mobile has made a commitment to ARCEP to improve its 4G network. According to the agreement signed in 2018, France’s cheapest operator is to install 10,000 new base stations by 2020.
