Players Choice Awards for the 2021 season were won by Shohei Ohtani Bryce Harper, Max Scherzer, and Robbie Ray, among others. The Major League Baseball Players Association presents the honors, which are voted on by the players. They were unveiled on ESPN on Thursday.
Ohtani and Ray were named Outstanding Player and Outstanding Pitcher for the American League, while Harper and Scherzer were named Outstanding Player and Outstanding Pitcher for the National League, respectively. These awards are similar to the MVP and Cy Young awards given out by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
According to the MLBPA, Ohtani was also selected Player of the Year, which is presented to the player who “demonstrates the finest on-field performance” in any league.
Ohtani, who was also honored with the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award prior to the World Series had an incredible season as a two-way player for the Los Angeles Angels, hitting.965 with 46 home runs and 26 stolen bases as a hitter and pitching with a 3.18 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals finished second and third, respectively. Guerrero was also runner-up for the Player of the Year Award to Ohtani, with Harper taking third place.
Harper led the National League in OPS (1.044) and weighted runs created plus (170), was second in FanGraphs wins above replacement (6.6), and hit 35 home runs for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015. Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals finished second in the voting, while Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres and Austin Riley of the Atlanta Braves tied for third.
In a statement, Phillies owner John Middleton remarked, “Bryce’s 2021 season was one of the finest in our franchise’s history.” “… We knew we were getting one of the top players in the game when we signed Bryce. We are thrilled to have him in Phillies pinstripes as he continues to make an everlasting impression on the game.”
Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who was moved from the Nationals to the Dodgers in the middle of the season, finished 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA in 179 1/3 innings and 236 strikeouts. The 37-year-old right-hander also had the lowest walk and strikeout rates in the National League, putting him ahead of Corbin Burnes and Zack Wheeler in the vote.
Ray resurrected for the Blue Jays in 2021, dropping his ERA from 6.62 in 2020 to an AL-low 2.84. In 193 1/3 innings, Ray had 13 wins, a 1.05 WHIP, and a Major League leading 248 strikeouts. The New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and the Chicago White Sox’ Lance Lynn finished second and third, respectively.
Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles hit 21 home runs and appeared in 147 games after overcoming Stage 3 colon cancer, and Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants, an All-Star after missing the 2020 season, were named Comeback Player of the Year in their respective leagues. Outstanding Rookie honors went to Baltimore Orioles left fielder Ryan Mountcastle (33 home runs) and Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India (3.9 FanGraphs wins above replacement).

Marcus Semien of the Blue Jays won the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, which is presented to the player “whose leadership most encourages others to greater levels of success,” according to the MLBPA.
Mark Belanger won the Curt Flood Award, which is given to a former player “who, in the image of Flood, demonstrated a selfless, longtime devotion to the Players Association and advancement of players’ rights,” according to the MLBPA. Belanger spent 18 years in the major leagues before becoming the first former player to work for the MLBPA in 1983.
Belanger worked for the MLBPA for 15 years until his death in 1998 at the age of 54, and before that he was a close friend of Miller, the longstanding executive who developed the organization into one of the most powerful in the nation.
