The Detroit Lions contracted Jared Goff this season and took Goff’s base salary as part of the deal.

However, after Goff’s arrival, it was thought that the team would decide to make a bold move with this contract to free up some more space. The team soon did. It has been announced that Goff’s contract will undergo a major change for the 2021 season.

Field Yates of ESPN previewed the details, revealing that the Lions plan to free up about $15 million this season by converting $20 million of Goff’s salary into a signing bonus.

The Lions converted $20 million of Jared Goff’s salary into a signing bonus, leaving $15 million of cap space for 2021.

The move would add $5 million to Goff’s contract for the 2022-2024 season, while Detroit will reportedly leave for the rest of this offseason.

While this move gives the Lions some wiggle room to get out of free agency and sign their 2021 class, it also adds $5 million to Goff’s contract for the years 2022-2024. That’s a lot of money and could make trading Goff, or even giving up a hit, more painful.

Either way, the Lions need space right now, and they’ll get it with this move.

Goff’s contract extension with the Rams was great

The Rams decided to sign Goff and try to build a future around him after his Super Bowl run with a huge contract for 2019. The Rams paid Goff $134 million, $110 million of which was guaranteed, at the time the highest contract for a quarterback in league history. The deal was soon superseded by Patrick Mahomes but Goff benefited from the deal and the Rams decided he was their quarterback of the future.

After an arduous 2020, the idea stalled, leaving Goff unable to close the deal in Los Angeles The Lions’ trade of Matthew Stafford further complicates matters, but Detroit gives Goff a chance to move on. Of course, there are other ways to extend your contract if you wish.

analyst predicts Jared Goff will have a successful career as aLion

Goff enters the Lions with a bruised ego, given the way things ended in LOS ANGELES The Rams wanted to get rid of their quarterback, and when they chose Stafford, they found a willing trading partner in the Lions. Now Goff is on the move. While many think he’s just a reserve or on an albatross contract, it’s clear that Goff has gotten some love for what he can still do in the league.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington tweeted after the exchange that he wasn’t giving up on Goff doing big things and that he will be in the playoffs very soon. The reason? His prodigious talent.

This is just a prediction, so don’t worry, but I’m just saying, and maybe I’m wrong, but who cares: Jared Goff will be the starting QB in the playoffs for the next 2 years.

– Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) January 31, 2021

I’m one of those people who can’t forget the skills. Jared Goff led the Rams to a 54-51 victory over the Chiefs two years ago He threw for 413 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INTs. I know he’s had a few bad ones. But, man, I think my glass is only half full. I think Goff has what it takes to win in the NFL.

– Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) January 31, 2021

The upside for Goff is that he will finish in Detroit alongside Brad Holmes, Aubrey Pleasant and Ray Agnew. With a lot of turnover in recent weeks and many Rams players coming to the Lions, Goff will be reunited with guys who know his talent and will play a big role for him.

Of course, Darlington isn’t saying where Goff might end up in the playoffs over the next two seasons, but it’s hard to imagine Brad Holmes giving up so quickly, so the implication could be that the Lions could end up being better than some are attributing to them after this deal.

Goff will have a chance to prove the Hatters wrong and take back the Rams in the future, and he is understandably motivated to do so.

Goff clearly has talent, so it will be interesting to see if he lives up to the hype. Whether he does or not, his ceiling situation will change in the short term.
