Thompson will make his long-awaited comeback against the Cavaliers on Sunday night after a protracted rehabilitation from two devastating injuries.
On Saturday, the Warriors’ star guard announced his return on Instagram and subsequently confirmed his participation in a statement.
Thompson told ESPN “I hate to use the word ‘can’t wait’ because I prefer to be present in my life.” “However, I can’t wait to play in front of our supporters once again.” Being a Warrior is a fantastic experience for me.”
Thompson last played in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals when he tore his ACL against the Toronto Raptors He missed the whole 2019-20 season and was set to return last season, but in November 2020, he tore his Achilles tendon, causing him to sit out another year.
Thompson will play limited minutes in the starting lineup as he works his way back into shape. He put money in the bank while he was on the bench before taking the floor.
In the 941 days since his last NBA game, Klay Thompson has added $85 million to his bank account.

Thompson’s journey over the previous two years has been nothing short of difficult.
He’s trying to recover from two catastrophic leg injuries that have caused him to lose years of his prime. Thompson, on the other hand, hasn’t suffered monetarily during that time since he’s in the third year of his five-year, $190 million contract. After injuring his ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, he signed the deal in July 2019.
Despite being sidelined due to injury, the five-time All-Star earned over $32.7 million in the 2019-20 season and around $35.3 million in the 2020-21 season. Before making his long-awaited return against the Cavaliers on Sunday night, he had missed the first 38 games of the season, earning him $17.6 million. All of this adds up to over $85.6 million in earnings since his final NBA game.
It’s a sum that dwarfs his earnings prior to his hefty deal. Under his rookie contract and the four-year, $68.9 million extension that went through the 2018-19 season, he earned $9.8 million in his first three years. It totals $78.7 million, which is approximately $10 million less than what he earned in the previous two seasons.
Thompson’s pay is not considered a waste by the Warriors, since he has shown to be one of the league’s best players when healthy. The onus is on him to show he’s still worth that kind of money, but golden state is certain he’ll reclaim his past form.
Warriors must be patient while the process unfolds.

While Thompson’s comeback substantially improves the Warriors’ chances of winning the NBA championship, it will need a lot of patience.
As he gets his body adapted to playing again for the first time since June 2019, the 31-year-old will need some time to get his legs back under him. Thompson will be limited to a certain number of minutes over the following several weeks in order to gain physical comfort.
Thompson will play 15 to 20 minutes in his first game, according to head coach Steve Kerr, and the team will progress from there. Kerr also said that the star guard would most likely take a break between sets.
Kerr told NBC Sports Bay Area, “There’s a fair possibility we’ll rest him on back-to-backs.” “It’ll all rely on how he reacts to his first few minutes and what Rick [Celebrini] says to me.” However, I believe there is a high likelihood we will keep him out of back-to-backs to begin with, but we don’t know for sure.”
It’ll be a learning process, but the Warriors have made it plain that they want to proceed with caution.
Spotrac provided the contract numbers.
