The Associated Press recently changed their policy, allowing them to pay freelance writers and photographers for syndicated articles. This was a controversial decision by the AP and is still met with criticism. Critics of the move say that freelancers will be pressured into accepting low pay in order to find content on websites like Medium or Vice News. However, some see this as an important step towards diversity in journalism
“It’s a good thing when people are talking about you.” is a quote from the movie “The Breakfast Club”. The quote speaks to the power of social media. Read more in detail here: when someone talks about you quotes.
Highlights of the article:
- Garoppolo, Jimmy is ignoring queries about his San Francisco 49ers future.
- When people speculate about what his job will be next season, the veteran quarterback thinks it’s a ‘wonderful thing.’
- Garoppolo’s value has risen in 2022 as a result of his handling of Trey Lance’s persistent presence.
The piano over Garoppolo, Jimmy’s head started preparing for impact as the San Francisco 49ers picked North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Nearly a year later, the keyboard sits nestled between Lance and the 49ers’ bench. Despite having his low moments throughout the 2021 season, Garoppolo is the starting quarterback for a club that is just three victories away from a Super Bowl championship.
Garoppolo is the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the time being. When it comes to next season, the Eastern Illinois product is trying not to be concerned right now.

Garoppolo had a strong 2021 season overall. In 15 starts, he completed 68.3% of his throws for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The veteran quarterback also rushed for three touchdowns, putting San Francisco in position to make the playoffs for the second time in three years.
When Garoppolo threw an interception or was injured, though, Lance’s name seemed to trend on Twitter. With a calf strain, the veteran quarterback missed one game and sat out a Week 17 win over the lowly Houston Texans with a thumb injury.
Garoppolo and the 49ers are living in the present, and he isn’t complaining about it. Garoppolo told NBC Sports’ Peter King on the Jan. 17 episode of Football Morning in America that, although he’s aware of the social media chatter about his future, he’s not focusing his attention on wondering what his role will be next season.
“I’m quite aware of the sort of quarterback I am. I know what kind of player I am and where I stand in this league. Everything that is going on out there, keep it up. It gives me energy and keeps me going. When people are talking about you, that’s a positive thing.”
Garoppolo, who graduated from EIU with a business degree, plainly believes that any attention is good PR.
With how he’s handled Lance’s lingering presence, Garoppolo’s quarterback stock has arguably only risen.
Trey Lance with high praise for Garoppolo, Jimmy’s leadership & for helping him through second career start:

Garoppolo is still just 30 years old and in his prime, despite the fact that it seems like he’s been in the NFL for a long time. When the 49ers moved up to get Lance last April, he could have responded in a variety of ways.
Garoppolo said all of the correct things in public and didn’t add to the flames. If Lance’s own statements during a news conference on Jan. 2 are any indication, the veteran quarterback did his bit privately as well.
According to NBC Sports, Lance told reporters, “Jimmy is one of the finest teammates and leaders I’ve ever been around.” “Having him, I know he’s got my back on the sideline, whether it’s a good or poor play.” He’s the first to approach me and make sure we’re on the same page.”
Garoppolo’s presence and input, according to Lance, is a “big confidence builder.” The rookie quarterback had no motive to lie, and his voice had a real tone to it. He’s almost probably not speaking in coach-speak to avoid causing a stir.
Obviously, any club interested in acquiring Garoppolo would do so in the hopes of having him lead them to the playoffs next season. Still, the fact that he seems to have taken it upon himself to coach a young quarterback — and his future successor — should be comforting.
Should the 49ers keep Garoppolo as their starting quarterback in 2022?
The 49ers picked Lance knowing that Garoppolo’s current deal has two years remaining on it. If the 49ers cut him, they would face a $26.9 million cap charge, and he still has a no-trade clause.
Because of Lance’s persistent presence, the 49ers may be forced to trade Garoppolo in the near future. The veteran quarterback makes sense as a one-year rental for certain clubs, such as the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos; such teams could retain him for 2022 and determine whether or not to re-sign him at a later date.
On the other hand, the 49ers could retain Garoppolo for another season and open 2022 with him as the starter. However, just because things are going well between Garoppolo and Lance this season does not guarantee that they will be the same next season, particularly if Lance has cabin fever on the bench. A club using a first-round choice on a quarterback and not having him begin his second season as the full-time starter is also highly unusual in the contemporary NFL.
Few can blame Garoppolo for preferring to live in the moment. But he and the 49ers will have to make a decision soon, particularly if San Francisco’s season ends in the NFC Divisional Round.
At the very least, talking about Garoppolo makes him happy. We guess any story concerning his future is a good thing.
