Intel Details New Blockscale ASIC for Energy-Efficient Blockchain Hashing

Intel, one of the biggest technology providers in the world, has released new details on its upcoming ASIC chips which will be used to mine cryptocurrencies. The processor chip is claimed to be more energy-efficient than current models and increase transaction speeds by 100x while reducing power consumption by 25%.

The “argo blockchain” is a new ASIC developed by Intel that will be able to process transactions on the Ethereum and Bitcoin blockchains.

Intel has officially announced its new Blockscale ASIC, which is the first step in the company’s commitment to building new energy-efficient accelerators. According to an early list of specs released by Intel, the Blockscale ASIC boasts a power efficiency of 26 J/TH, as well as a hash rate of up to 580 GH/s and a dedicated SHA-256 processor. Temperature and voltage sensing capabilities are also included, as well as support for up to 256 integrated circuits per chain. Block Inc. and Argo Blockchain are among the first clients for Intel’s Blockscale ASIC, which will begin delivering in Q3 of this year.

In a statement, Balaji Kanigicherla, Intel Vice President and general manager of Custom Compute in the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group, stated, “Momentum behind blockchain continues to develop.” “It paves the path for novel business models by enabling decentralized and distributed computing.”

“To power this new era of computing, Intel is delivering solutions that can offer an optimal balance of hashing throughput and energy efficiency regardless of a customer’s operating environment. Intel’s decades of R&D in cryptography, hashing techniques and ultra-low voltage circuits make it possible for blockchain applications to scale their computing power without compromising on sustainability.”

“Intel is committed to responsibly advancing blockchain technology, and we’re proud to collaborate with and provide solutions to companies that are working to build a more sustainable cryptocurrency ecosystem around the world,” said Jose Rios, general manager of Intel’s Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group. “In the years ahead, the Intel Blockscale ASIC will play a critical role in assisting bitcoin mining firms in achieving both sustainability and hash rate scaling targets.”

Intel Introduces Blockscale Technology for Energy-Efficient Blockchain Hashing (Intel Newsroom)

What’s New: Intel today announced details for its new Intel Blockscale ASIC. Building on years of Intel research and development (R&D), this application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) will provide customers with energy-efficient hashing for proof-of-work consensus networks.

Why Does It Matter? Due to their robustness and capacity to expand without losing decentralization, the demand for compute for blockchains using proof-of-work consensus techniques is rapidly increasing. This increasing processing power necessitates the development of new computer technologies that can deliver the required power in a more energy-efficient way while also being robust enough to address long-term e-waste problems.

The Intel Blockscale ASIC will offer the energy efficiency and computational capacity required to enable scalability and sustainability for proof-of-work algorithms that are compatible with ASIC-based systems and SHA-256 hashing. And, because of the nature of the silicon that powers this technology, Intel will be able to produce it in large quantities without jeopardizing the availability of new CPUs or GPUs.

The Intel Blockscale ASIC has the following features: The Intel Blockscale ASIC has the following key features:

ASIC processor dedicated to the Secure Hash Algorithm-256 (SHA-256). Operating at up to 580 GH/s hash rate and up to 26 J/TH power efficiency. Temperature and voltage sensing capabilities on the device. Up to 256 integrated circuits per chain are supported. Customers may use a reference hardware design and software stack to get a head start on their system development.

When It Will Be Available: Intel Blockscale ASIC will be available to customers in the third quarter of 2022. Among the first firms to create new systems based on Intel’s ASIC will be Argo Blockchain, Block Inc., Hive Blockchain Technologies, and GRIID Infrastructure.

Intel will cooperate with and supply potential customers that share Intel’s environmental objectives in 2023 and beyond.
