Preseason Preview: Raiders vs. Rams

In their first preseason game, the Raiders defeated the Seattle Seahawks 20-7. Derek Carr sat, and Nathan Peterman, who went 29-39 for 246 yards and an interception, handled all of the snaps. Marcus Mariota, the backup quarterback, did not play, although he did see some action in this game. In the victory, Las Vegas’ defense was outstanding, allowing just 194 total yards, 68 of which were gained on the ground.

This week, both teams conducted combined workouts, and things got a little tense — so tense, in fact, that the second session was stopped short due to too many fights.

After the scuffles in practice, Rams coach Sean McVay remarked, “I’m happy nobody got hurt.” “It’s really bad we weren’t able to finish.”

Raiders head coach Jon Gruden stated this when asked what message he had for his players after the second session was cut short:

“There is no message,” Gruden said emphatically. “They are aware. They are aware of the situation. Everyone is aware of the situation. Again, it wasn’t everyone fighting — you’ll see a lot of people shouting and yelling on TV — but it was just two special teams players. Following that, there was a lot of trash-talking. It’s disgusting, to be honest; it’s simply idiocy. That’s all I have to say about it. To me, it’s all child’s play.”

The Rams were defeated 13-6 by the Los Angeles Chargers in their first preseason game. Backup quarterbacks Duck Hodges and Bryce Perkins took all of the team’s snaps as starting quarterback Matthew Stafford sat. Perkins went 7-10 for 42 yards and a touchdown, while Hodges completed 11 of 19 throws for 85 yards and an interception.

Even without Aaron Donald, Los Angeles put up a strong defense, but the offense couldn’t put up much of a fight. L.A. will rest its starters once again, and the Raiders will likely concentrate on getting some of their younger guys more repetitions, based on Gruden’s remarks leading up to the game.

“We’re going to attempt to be wise and stay on track in terms of the development of our young guys and this team,” Gruden said. “In the next day or two, we’ll convene as a staff and figure out who’s up and who’s out here.”

It’s probably a good thing the Rams are resting CB Jalen Ramsey, who was beaten several times in joint workouts this week by Las Vegas tight end Hunter Renfrow. Renfrow’s role — if he has one at all — is unclear, but if they both participated, it would be an interesting duel to witness.
