How The Batman Sets Up the Gotham PD Prequel Series

With the release of DC’s Gotham coming up in early 2019, studios and audiences are looking for answers about what happened before. The new show will be a prequel to Batman Begins, showing how Thomas Wayne became Commissioner Gordon. However, this hasn’t been confirmed yet by Fox or Warner Bros , which owns the rights to both Batman films and TV shows.

The “the batman prequel novel ” is a book that was released in the beginning of June. It is set to be the first installment in a series that will focus on how Gotham City’s police department came to be and the events leading up to Batman’s arrival.

The Batman has finally come in cinemas after a lengthy wait, and it has brought with it a whole new area of the live-action DC universe. Warner Bros had big aspirations for the tale even before the Matt Reeves-directed film was released, with various spinoff series in the works for the HBO Max streaming service. The first is a spinoff centered on the Gotham City Police Department that has been in production since 2020 and is thought to be a precursor to the events of the film. While the show’s behind-the-scenes personnel has changed over the years and no firm facts about its cast or launch date have been released, there’s a potential that The Batman may have hinted to what’s to come in the series. There are major spoilers for The Batman below! If you really want to know, just look!

To begin with, the core premise of the film concerns Bruce Wayne / Batman (Robert Pattinson) exploring a series of traps set by Edward Nashton / The Riddler (Paul Dano) that uncover a conspiracy at the heart of Gotham City. Several high-ranking officials, including the mayor, police commissioner, and District Attorney were personally pocketing money from the Gotham Renewal fund, which Thomas Wayne established soon before his tragic death in the intention of utilizing it to improve the city. Part of the Riddler’s strategy was to expose the corruption while simultaneously killing the key criminals. It certainly stands to reason that the GCPD series could showcase some of the earlier instances of that, with appearances from the likes of Commissioner Pete Savage (Alex Ferns) and District Attorney Gil Colson (Peter Sarsgaard) prior to their murders, and possibly more context into the fake drug bust they orchestrated surrounding Salvatore Maroni. Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon, has been tight-lipped about his role in the series, despite the fact that it seems to be a distinct possibility.

Aside than that, the series is a bit of a blank slate in terms of which characters to root for, particularly as it deviates from the established canon of the Gotham Central comic series. The arrival of the “Unseen Arkham Prisoner” (Barry Keoghan), who is highly hinted to be that universe’s version of The Joker, is one strand from later in the film that might still feature into the series. Officer Stanley Merkel, a relatively frequent GCPD officer who first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, was initially mentioned as Keoghan’s role in the project. Reeves recently claimed that the casting announcement was made to dissuade people from thinking he might portray The Joker, including recording phony sequences of Keoghan as Merkel.

If The Batman wanted to surprise viewers, it might reveal part of Keoghan’s character’s spiral into lunacy, whether starting off as Merkel or another known Joker disguise completely. This might enable a Joker “origin story” to be portrayed in a completely different structure and context than the 2019 Joker solo feature, as well as providing some fascinating background for when Keoghan’s version of the character next appears. It would also help to explain Reeves’ previous statements about Arkham Asylum (conveniently, where we meet Joker in The Batman) being a part of a spinoff series.

The Batman is currently only available in cinemas.
