Hoffenheim v Arsenal: Gunners qualify for knockout stage despite heavy defeat by Hoffenheim

Arsenal move into the Champions League knockout stages after beating Hoffenheim 3-1 on Tuesday night in a match where they were outplayed by their opponents. Die Roten Bullen had taken an early lead before Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette struck to seal victory for Arsene Wenger’s men, who are now unbeaten in 16 matches across all competitions this season.

Despite losing 4-1 to Hoffenheim in their last group match, Arsenal qualified for the Women’s champions league knockout round.

Despite scoring four goals against Arsenal, the German club, who lost the reverse encounter 4-0 in October, failed to advance to the final eight.

Jule Brand gave the hosts the lead, but an own goal by Laura Wienroither tied the game at halftime.

Hoffenheim scored three goals in five minutes early in the second half to run out victors, with Chantal Hagel scoring twice and Gia Corley scoring once.

To progress to the final eight, Jonas Eidevall’s Arsenal team needed to avoid a five-goal loss, and they headed into the game full of confidence after scoring four goals against these same opponents at home on matchday two.

Despite the defeat, Arsenal finished second in Group C, nine points behind reigning champions Barcelona.

There will be more to come.
