Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers became the sixth player to be named NFL MVP at least three times. He accepted the award Saturday at the NFL Honors Show as a beaming winner.

Rodgers, who virtually took the best player award, received 44 of 50 votes from a national media committee. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen received four votes and Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes received two.

Rodgers also won in the 2011 and 2014 seasons.

“It’s an honor to win this award for the third time,” Mr. Rodgers said in a video-prepared acceptance speech. “2020 has been a crazy year, with lots of changes, growth, memorable moments, scraping my nose hairs 180 days in a row and playing in front of very few fans all season. I got engaged and played one of the best soccer games of my career. ”

Defender Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans and quarterback Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams were named NFL Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and Washington quarterback Chase Young have been named the top rookies in the NFL.

MVP: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers

Offensive Player of the Year: Derrick Henry, RB, Titans.

Defensive Player of the Year: Aaron Donald, DT, Rams.

Offensive recruit of the year: Justin Herbert, QB, Chargers.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Chase Young, Washington.

Coach of the Year: Kevin Stefanski, Browns.

Player of the Year: Alex Smith, QB, Washington

Rodgers, who led the Packers to a 13-3 record, is the third player in NFL history to lead the league in touchdown passing (48) while making the fewest interceptions (five), following Tom Brady in 2010 and Johnny Unitas in 1958, according to a study by the Elias Sports Bureau. Rodgers set a record QBR of 84.4, the third-highest in a single season since ESPN began using this metric 15 years ago.

He joined Brett Favre, Jim Brown, Brady and Unitas as three-time winners – all in second place behind five-time MVP Peyton Manning.

And for Rodgers, it all started with an old clip and a training camp that indicated he was back on track.

The shot was made on Marquez Valdez-Scantling on a course that Rodgers called a “stop play,” something they worked on virtually all offseason as a key part of Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur’s attack, which never got off to a good start in his first season at the helm in 2019.

“It gave me confidence that the things I’ve been thinking about, working on and visualizing can come true,” Rodgers said in December, revealing one of his secrets for the first time this season. “Now you never know when live ball starts how you’re going to play, but I think it was an important day in training camp for me. And a lot of things have changed for me in terms of balance, tempo and timing.”

Rodgers also referenced a clip from the team’s Super Bowl season a decade ago, but it wasn’t until this season’s NFC championship against the hosts Tampa Bay Buccaneers that he finally revealed what he had seen.

“The key I saw was just the rhythm of my car,” Rodgers said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show last month. “I realized in that moment that I wanted to dive in at the top of my fall. And that was something I missed, given my injury and the adjustments I had to make, which meant my knee and foot weren’t as strong as they used to be.

Rodgers suffered a tibial plateau fracture and MCL sprain in his left knee in the first week of the 2018 season. He played through the injury and started all 16 games. ….

“And that’s part of the reason I went back to the squat, because I wanted to set that thing up so I could put a ton of weight and pressure on my knee and feet, because the deeper I got into my scrums, the more I threw the ball,” he says. “And I really saw how much attention I paid to it in 2010, 2009 and 2011, and what it really helped me do was throw the ball on time, and in all those games I watched, my timing was really, really good.

Henry won his award with 32 out of 50 votes, easily beating Rogers and Mahomes, who received 5 votes each.

Donald received 27 votes, ahead of T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who received 20 votes.

Henry recorded the fifth most rushing yards in a single season in the NFL with 2,027 yards. He also threw for 17 touchdowns and became the sixth player in NFL history to lead the league in runs and touchdowns two seasons in a row.

Henry is only the fourth of the year to win the offense since 2010, and the first since Todd Gurley in 2017.

Donald was named Defensive Player of the Year for the third time in four years, winning the award after the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He joins Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as the only players to have won the award three times since it was awarded in 1971.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Donald led all players this season with 54 pressures. He also led the championship for the third season in a row in terms of pass gain as an inside defender (24.2%), despite his double-double on 65.7% of his passes (third highest mark in the championship).

Herbert and Young were the clear winners of the rookie poll. Herbert received 41 votes, while Minnesota Viking receiver Justin Jefferson was second in the rookie poll with nine votes. Young received 42.5 votes and Carolina Panthers quarterback Jeremy Chinn was second in defense with 4.5 votes.

Herbert was the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL draft and threw for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns in 15 games – a rookie season record.

“Thank you to the Chargers organization, the Spanos family, Tom Telesco and coach Anthony Lynn for giving a kid from Eugene, Oregon a chance,” Herbert said in a recorded video message. “Without them, none of this would be possible. It’s an incredible honor to be considered for this award, but I know it’s not possible without my teammates.

Young was the second pick in the draft and recorded 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three tough recoveries, which was only possible for a rookie defensive end in 2003 when Terrell Suggs was still a rookie playing the previous 20 seasons.

“It certainly wasn’t the recruiting season I expected, with the pandemic and everything that happened,” Young said.

On Saturday, Kevin Stefanski, who led the Cleveland Browns to their first winning season since 2007, their first playoff appearance since 2002 and their first postseason victory since 1994, was also named coach of the year.

Stefanski received 25 of the 50 votes. Sean McDermott of Buffalo (7) is second and Brian Flores of the Miami Dolphins (6) is third.

Washington quarterback Alex Smith, who suffered a broken fibula and tibia followed by 17 surgeries due to infections that nearly cost him his right leg, was named player of the year.

Smith came close with 49 votes, while Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger received one vote.

Smith started the season 5-1, helping Washington reach the playoffs.

“Two years ago I was in a wheelchair wondering if the life I knew had changed forever,” Smith said in a recorded speech. “Anger, pity, self-doubt, why me? I’ve had these feelings at times in my career, but this time it wasn’t about soccer. It was more than that. It was about a father playing with his children, a husband walking around with his wife, and despite my new limitations, I have my life back.

“My goal was soccer, not because I thought it was real, but because I knew it would improve my life.” … It took 728 days, 728 days of small victories and big failures, countless hours of physical therapy and just as many sleepless nights.”
