Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers is “pretty confident” about re-signing Stephen Curry to a contract extension. “We’ve expressed our desire to get something done, but we understand, like every other player in the NBA, he’d like to get it done in a shorter window,” said Myers during an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio . “We’re hopeful that we’ll get something done relatively soon, but at the same time, we’re not going to push it.”
Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers ‘pretty confident’ about re-signing Stephen Curry to extension
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, golden state Warriors GM Bob Myers “is pretty confident” about re-signing Stephen Curry to an extension in the offseason. “I’d be surprised if he didn’t come back,” Myers said. Myers added that the Warriors have shown a willingness to re-sign every core member of the team on a long-term contract since buying the franchise in 2010. He added that re-signing Curry to a max deal would be a formality, given his production. The Warriors would reportedly give their franchise player the largest contract in NBA history at around $200 million.. Read more about warriors gm and let us know what you think.
FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers is confident he can contract Stephen Curry this summer after the 33-year-old star guard led the league in scoring with an average of 32 points per game and was one of three finalists for the MVP award.
I see no reason not to be optimistic, Myers said Monday during a postseason video conference. He seems motivated. We’re motivated. I’d say I’m pretty sure we’re getting somewhere.
As ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted, Curry’s new contract extension will be a record: He will be the first player in NBA history to sign two separate contracts worth more than $200 million. Curry was the first player to sign a super max extension in 2017, signing a five-year, $201 million contract. He can now sign a four-year, $215.4 million contract through the 2025-26 season.
Of course we want Steph back, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. There’s no reason to think this wouldn’t happen. We’re happy about that. We look forward to the next season. You know, Draymond [Green] and Steph coming back at such a high level, the end of the season, Clay [Thompson] coming back and being able to join our team, seeing these kids grow – it’s all very exciting.
One of the reasons the Warriors are so excited is that they are confident Thompson, who missed his second consecutive season following ACL and hamstring injuries, will return to the field. As Myers noted, there’s little chance Thompson will be ready for the start of the regular season.
I don’t know what it will be like at the beginning of the year, Myers said. We’ll see more as we approach the camp. When I say the beginning of the year, I mean the first game. I don’t know if that’s realistic or not. That will be the case in less than a year. … I don’t know when the season starts, but I think it’s in 11 months. I don’t know if that’s realistic.
I want to talk a lot about clover, but I don’t because I don’t want to use it as an excuse. I don’t want people to think that if Clay comes back, everything will be okay again. As great as he is, and he will be a big help, we have to look at our team and say Clay will be a great asset, but there are other areas we need to improve. But I don’t know exactly when that will happen.
Myers said the main goal this season is to add veterans to the team. Outside of Curry, who Myers said was playing with a small broken tailbone, and Green, the Warriors didn’t have strong veterans like in previous years.
I know we need veterans, and the one thing I can say unequivocally is that we need to add some veterans in free agency Myers said. We just have to do it. We are well aware of that. That’s what we’re trying to do. We tried that last year with a couple of guys, which is not to say it wasn’t thought of that way. It doesn’t matter, nobody cares, but we were in second place with a couple of guys that I think were veterans that could have helped, but after Clay got injured, they decided to go to a team that they thought could win more, and that’s fair to them.
Myers explained why the Warriors have failed to bolster their veteran presence in recent years compared to other teams.
Some even said: If Clay hadn’t been injured, I would have gotten in, Myers said. Who knows if it’s true or not. But that’s what we’ve hopefully accomplished over the last few months: prove to some of these guys that the Warriors can win. You have to believe that. I hope we’ve shown we’re close. But that’s what you get when you have a veteran who makes a minimal bid or a veteran taxpayer who probably accepts less money – can I win with the Warriors? Without a doubt they like playing with Steph, and they like Steve, and I think they see our organization as one that cares about its players.
One of the players the Warriors seem to want to deal with the most is 20-year-old center James Wiseman After rookie Wiseman’s disappointing season came to an abrupt end after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in April, Myers made it clear he had no intention of selling the young player this offseason.
I think he can help us, Myers said. I expect him to be on the team next year. We don’t want to trade James Wiseman I think he’s a huge talent and he’s been put in a position where hopefully he’ll take all the blows early in his career, but I think he can be very useful to us in the future. I think it could be useful in the present.
Myers also said Kelly made it clear to Oubre Jr. in the exit interview that he wants to stay, but Kerr said he likes Oubre and hopes he returns, but that the swingman will play on the bench.
Clay will start the game as soon as he gets back, Kerr said. So, would Kelly be interested in a seat on the couch? That is a question only he can answer. He will weigh his options, we will weigh ours and see where it goes. But I really like Kelly, I think he has a lot of potential to be very useful on our team.
Kerr also said that despite the embarrassing losses against the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies in the qualifying tournament, he hopes the concept will stick because he thinks the tournament is good for the league.
A month ago I was joking that I would hate it if we lost and I would love it if we won, but honestly I love it, Kerr said. I love it. I think it’s good for the league, and what’s good for the league should be more important than worrying about the eighth seed not making the playoffs. I think we should leave it at that. The interest in playing more in all areas was greater than it had been in a long time There were several mini races between the teams to avoid seventh place. As a fan, I found it fascinating.
As for the future of his own team, Kerr was optimistic about a quick turnaround, but he agreed with Green, who noted after Friday’s loss against the Grizzlies that the organization is still a long way from another title.
I’m fine with that, Kerr said. I think it would be presumptuous of us to say, after we just missed the playoffs: Hey, we’re already here. We still have a long way to go, but we like the way we’ve gone. We love the fact that… Steph and Draymond are playing at a high level, we have young players who have developed.
We know James will get better after a year. We have first rounders and free agency coming up. The important thing is that Clay comes back to us. Put it all together and I think we have a chance to make a big leap. But no, we can’t sit here and honestly say we’re close to a championship because Draymond is right: We have to make the playoffs before we can talk about that.
