The tablet market is declining and Samsung expects to turn the situation around with its Galaxy Tab A (2019). With a few small external changes, new hardware and potential-rich functionality, the new Galaxy Tab A may not save the entire tablet market, but it should find its place.
With the Galaxy Tab A 2019 and Galaxy Tab S5e, which is also being introduced today, Samsung is renewing its Android tablet offerings. With a price of 210 euros for WiFi only and 270 euros for the LTE variant, this Galaxy Tab A is in line with the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite, while the Apple iPad 9.7 has a starting price of 349 euros. Samsung has scheduled the launch of the Galaxy Tab A 2019 in stores on April 5.
Even if the trend in the tablet market shows a clear decline, this does not mean that Samsung tablets should not be worked on. The design of the Galaxy Tab A 2019 illustrates this rather well, Samsung claims to be a high-end brand, even in tablets of this type.

You can see that quickly, let’s take a look at the case. Most of it is made of aluminum, not plastic. Well, okay, Samsung hasn’t totally bypassed plastic because they use it to allow the antennas to send and receive data at the back.

If you’re looking for a tablet with an AMOLED screen that offers good contrast and deep blacks, the Galaxy Tab A 2019 is clearly not what you need. In this family tablet we find a 10.1 inch TFT screen with a resolution of 1900 x 1200 . What is interesting is that it has a mode optimized for outdoor use.
With this mode, the screen benefits from improved brightness, even in direct sunlight. We will measure the total brightness that the device can reach, but the product manager said 400 nits.

As far as the software interface is concerned, Samsung is relying here on its new One UI interface. Instead of using the known variant of the Galaxy Note9 or the S series, we find a slightly modified version optimized for tablets. When we first started using the software, we were not able to use the final version of the software but I could still notice that OneUI is able to better exploit the big screen. For example, when you are about to change applications in the multitasking menu, the applications are not displayed one after the other but in a grid form and therefore use more surface area.
The real star here is actually not OneUI but a special feature that brings real added value to the device. It is called Smart Things and makes the multimedia tablet a powerhouse for the connected home.

The interface allows you to control connected objects from different manufacturers. This means that you don’t have to juggle with each other’s applications, which is very practical. According to Samsung, 400 products would be compatible and not only Samsung’s, Philips Hue’s, Netgear Arlo’s and many others are compatible.

Inside this Galaxy Tab A, Samsung has placed a homemade component: the Exynos 7904 octocore chip. This chip promises more power than the Snapdragon 450 on all levels. Instead of relying on 8 ARM Cortex 53 cores as the Qualcomm 450 does, this chip from Exynos relies on 2 Cortex A73 cores for high performance and 6 A53 cores for everyday performance.
The chip is supported by 2 GB RAM and 32 GB internal memory. If you need more space, you can use a microSD card and get up to 400 GB more.
In order to get a good sound quality, Samsung has placed d them speakers in the lower part of the device. They can provide Dolby Atom surround sound. Can surround sound really give good results in this configuration? This will remain to be demonstrated in our final test. Good news, it is to note that the mini-jack catch is there.

Do we need tablet cameras? It’s up to everyone to make up their own mind but in any case it’s common to place one and Samsung has also done it with its Galaxy Tab A 2019: in front the camera is 5 megapixels, in the back it’s 8 megapixels.
For the tablet to allow you to play games and watch movies for hours, Samsung has placed a 6150 mAh battery that charges via a USB-C port . Due to the presence of aluminium the shelf does not offer wireless charging. We will of course test the device’s autonomy in more detail when we receive it at the editorial office.

Samsung has created a tablet for beginner users and families. Even the youngest ones can enjoy it thanks to the child mode. The tablet also offers access to Smart Things, a feature dedicated to the connected home. More and more products from the manufacturer as well as from third party companies will be available and can be easily controlled, giving the tablet a real raison d’être.
