Getting Started: Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge

As expected, it was at the Unpacked 2015 just before the MWC that Samsung made official not only the Samsung Galaxy S6 but also the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, its twin brother with a screen with curved side edges.

Here, no new features like on the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge but just curved edges to emphasize the design. Speaking of design, these two new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge clearly mark a break with the previous products in the Galaxy S range, which is not bad.

In terms of technical specifications, I remind you that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are equipped with a new design with brushed aluminum slices and a glass back. Next to it, there is a Super AMOLED Quad HD screen (2560 x 1440 pixels) of 5.1″, an Exynos 7420 octa-core processor (2.1GHz + 1.5Ghz) with 3GB RAM, with a capacity of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB (unfortunately exits the microSD port), an APN with a 16 Megapixel backlit sensor accompanied by an optical stabilizer, a LED flash and a lens with an aperture of F/1.9, a 5-megapixel front camera with a lens with an aperture of F/1.9, a new biometric sensor on the Home button, a heart rate monitor on the back, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC (Samsung Pay support) and Infrared, the 4G LTE Cat. 6, or a 2550 mAh (S6) or 2600 mAh (S6 Edge) battery with ultra-fast recharging (10 minutes for 4 hours) and wireless Qi / PMA, all under Android Lollipop 5.0 + TouchWiz in a brand new streamlined version.

The difference between the two models is only at the screen level, with curved edges on the Galaxy S6 Edge. The dimensions of the Galaxy S6 are 143.4×70.5×6.8mm with a weight of 138g compared to 142.1×70.1x7mm and a weight of 132g for the Galaxy S6 Edge.

They will be available in 5 colours: White, Black, Gold, Blue and Green, on 10 April worldwide at prices starting at 709 euros (S6) and 849 euros (S6 Edge). Please note that it will be available for pre-order from March 26th with a free induction charger.

When you first pick it up, what is surprising is its weight and size. Indeed, for a smartphone with a 5.1″ screen, it feels like a smaller smartphone, and that’s even more obvious with the Galaxy S6 Edge. And because we’re talking about the Edge version, the curved edges are only there for aesthetic purposes. Moreover, the screen itself hardly extends over the curved edges. Race results, we find ourselves with almost the same display between the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Speaking of displays, you can imagine that a Super AMOLED screen in first impressions always looks good, and it does.

Samsung has promised us a breakthrough product and this is really the case with the S6 and S6 Edge. So yes, for the bottom slice, and if you focus only on it, you feel like you’re seeing a slice of iPhone 6. Now, it’s really only about the Galaxy S6, and quite honestly, if you take the design as a whole, I don’t think the S6 looks like an iPhone 6. The S6 Edge has a more pronounced design and is very comfortable to hold. The curved edges give it a rather impressive feeling of finesse. Besides, I was a bit afraid to get a grip on it, and in the end, the smartphone stays well in hand without ever slipping. This is also the case for S6 since the left and right edges are flattened in the centre of the slice. It’s very pleasant and it keeps the smartphone from slipping.

The glass back, on the other hand, is a double-edged sword. Honestly, when it’s clean, it’s super nice and I quite like this mirror side, especially on the colored versions. Now, as you can imagine, it scores and scores a lot, which may eventually put off even the most maniacal among you. The design of the S6 is more classic in the absolute sense and this is mainly due to its flat screen. Now, for both of them, I think the overall design remains nice and classy!

I obviously couldn’t test the performance, but my first impressions were that the user interface was pretty smooth, thanks not only to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, but also to the fact that Samsung has finally decided to simplify TouchWiz. By the way, we’re talking about only two Samsung applications pre-installed, the rest being downloadable from the Galaxy application. In fact, it’s still impressive to see how TouchWiz gets simpler over time. Maybe we’ll get to Android Stock by Galaxy SX (S10 )? We also don’t forget the new memory technology that came out of the PC world and is faster, just like the RAM which is now DDR4. Everything I was able to test on site was of exemplary fluidity, especially compared to my Galaxy Note 4 that I had with me.

Because I love photography, I’ve been playing around a little with the new photo app. It is definitely simpler and, above all, quicker to launch. The AF is still as fast as ever and if Samsung insisted that it was better than an iPhone 6 Plus, I’ll obviously wait and see before deciding. Anyway, I’m glad to see that it’s still a 16 Megapixel sensor and not 20 or more, which are so useless if not take up a lot of space. A quick word about the biometric reader that finally works like an iPhone, i.e. you don’t have to slide your finger anymore, you just put it down.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

To finish, we will inevitably linger on the defects, no more microSD port, which may put off more than one. Now, thank you Samsung to offer at least 32GB and not 16GB like Apple. Note also the non-removable battery that I put into perspective since the S4, I never changed the battery in my daily life. On the side, I remind you that the battery recharges super fast (10 minutes for 4 hours of use) and that’s appreciable. Finally, we don’t have IP6x certifications anymore, it’s a pity, even if I never used them in absolute terms.

Now there is the question of price. So yes, it’s front-end with Apple and it’s expensive. This is where Samsung’s gonna have to prove itself. Clearly, Samsung didn’t have a choice anyway. If the Korean brand lowered the price of its flagship, it would find itself on the front line with rising brands like Huawei. So, if you’re going to do premium, you might as well go for it. Now we’ll see whether the public will respond or not.
