After putting Fulham ahead against Preston, Aleksandar Mitrovic celebrates.
Fulham thrashed Preston to clinch promotion to the Premier League with Aleksandar Mitrovic’s double bringing his season total to 40 goals.
In the first half, the Serbian striker scored twice, sandwiching an eye-catching goal by youngster Fabio Carvalho.
Mitrovic was denied a hat-trick by Preston goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, but it made little difference to the result as Marco Silva’s team secured promotion.
If Fulham beats second-placed Bournemouth on Saturday, they might virtually clinch the championship.
With Marek Rodak forced into action to stop Ched Evans and then tip Ben Whiteman’s long-range shot over the bar, the Cottagers might have been down early on.
Joe Bryan gained possession and ran down the left wing to set up Mitrovic, who slotted the ball under Iversen’s knees in the ninth minute, quickly dispelling any concerns.
As the home side grabbed control, Carvalho and Harrison Reed came close to increasing the advantage, slashing through Preston’s defence.
In the 34th minute, Carvalho scored Fulham’s second goal, blasting home on his left foot after Neeskens Kebano’s cross bounced perfectly into his path.
Mitrovic made it 3-0 right before halftime, breaking the 40-goal barrier with another brilliant burst down the left flank, assisted by Harry Wilson.
Rodak made another fingertip stop to thwart Cameron Archer’s shot against the woodwork early in the second half, almost cutting the lead in half.
But there was no spectacular Preston comeback – and no third goal for Mitrovic, who had two more chances saved by Iversen before being replaced with a quarter-hour left.
Fulham had to be pleased with the three goals – and the result that secured their third promotion in five years – despite Neco Williams’ long-range attempt going just wide.
