Are you getting a DirectX runtime error on Valorant? This is exactly the instruction you need to read right now!

Before you know how to fix DirectX runtime error on Valorant, you need to know exactly why this error occurs.

DirectX is required for your game to access the hardware components (e.g. the graphics card) of your system. With DirectX, developers no longer have to modify their games to make them compatible with different Nvidia and AMD hardware.

Why does the DirectX runtime error occur with Valorant?

If your operating system is missing one or more important DirectX runtime library files or if the version of DirectX is outdated, runtime errors may occur.

Here are some reasons why this can happen:

  1. It is possible that the drivers of your graphics card are not up to date. In this case, there is an incompatibility between the current version of DirectX on your system and the driver of your graphics card. The first step to resolving the DirectX runtime error on Valorant is to make sure your graphics card drivers (even if they are built-in) are up to date.
  2. Are you sure that your graphics card driver is not the culprit? You are probably using an older version of DirectX. With a DirectX update you can take advantage of the latest known bug fixes, which will improve the performance of your game. DirectX 12 is the latest version, but Valorant also runs smoothly on DirectX 11.
  3. While it doesn’t happen often, the developers at Riot Games sometimes release Valorant updates with glitches, especially when the season changes. In the past, Valorant became unplayable a few hours after a season change. So the DirectX error you get could be the result of an unprepared game update. In that case, there is nothing you can do and it is up to the developers to resolve the situation.

Fix DirectX runtime error on Valorant

Riot Vanguard is an anti-cheat program developed by Riot Games for use in the game Valorant. If Vanguard doesn’t work, Valorant won’t start at all, and corrupt Vanguard files can cause unexpected Valorant errors. To fix anything related to Riot Vanguard, just restart your computer and see if everything works again. If restarting didn’t do anything (although it usually does) and you’re still getting a DirectX runtime error in Valorant, follow this troubleshooting checklist!

Update your GPU drivers

Are you using a special graphics card? Run the graphics card driver update utility (e.g. GeForce Experience if you are using an Nvidia card) and verify that the latest updates have been downloaded and applied. Sometimes GeForce Experience only downloads the latest drivers, but does not install them without your permission. If you are working with an integrated graphics card, you can use an updater (e.g. Driver Pack Solution) to manually update the processor driver.

Update Direct X to fix runtime errors on Valorant

Get the latest updates for DirectX, even if the game was originally developed for an older version. Find out how to get the latest DirectX updates on Windows 10.

Go to Settings on the Start menu and click on the last tab titled Update and Security.

From the Windows Update menu, you can see if there are any new updates to be applied to your system. Have you updated your DirectX? Restart your computer so that the update is fully applied.

Reinstalling Riot Vanguard

Most errors on Valorant are caused by Vanguard, so it is strongly recommended to reinstall Vanguard and see if the error is fixed.

No! You can’t use Valorant without Vanguard.

Vanguard can be removed directly from the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel. After uninstalling the application, launch the Riot Games launcher and try to launch Valorant. You will be prompted to reinstall Vanguard. The Riot Games launcher will download the files needed to install Vanguard and you can return to Valorant when this is complete.

Let us know in the comments if the DirectX runtime error persists after applying the above fixes.
