Firefox is a popular web browser with its own rendering engine, which is very rare in the world of chrome-based browsers. Since 2017, Firefox has had a Quantum engine with a refined user interface, codenamed Photon.
The browser no longer supports XUL-based add-ons, so all conventional add-ons are obsolete and incompatible. Check out Must Have add-ons for Firefox Quantum.
Thanks to changes to the engine and user interface, the browser is surprisingly fast. Firefox’s user interface is now more responsive and it launches much faster too. The engine makes web pages much faster than ever before in the Gecko era.
Firefox reached version 85 today. In addition, there is a new version of ESR 78.7.0. Firefox 86, scheduled for the 23rd. February should begin beta testing in the next few hours.
What’s new in Firefox 85
The press release contains the following important changes.
Partitioning network state to prevent cross-site tracking
Firefox 85 makes fundamental changes to the browser’s network architecture. It will now make connections to the network partition and free the cache of the visited website. Trackers can abuse caches to create supercaches and use login IDs to track users. But by isolating caches and network connections from the page on which they are made, Firefox makes intersite tracking by supercookies impossible.
Improvement of the bookmark user interface
Firefox 85 includes a number of improvements to the Bookmark user interface. The bookmark panel is now automatically displayed on a new bookmark page.
In addition, Firefox now remembers the last bookmark folder you used and uses it by default when you create a new bookmark.
In addition, the Bookmarks panel is now replaced with the Bookmarks Other panel by default, as it was before.
Delete all passwords stored in Firefox Lockwise
Firefox’s integrated password manager now offers the ability to delete all saved account information at once, without having to delete each list entry individually. It is accessible via the menu button with the three dots that …… can be reached.
WebRender under Linux
On Linux, the WebRender composition engine is enabled by default for the GNOME desktop environment with Wayland. In an earlier release, WebRender support was enabled for GNOME in an X11 environment. The use of WebRender on Linux is still limited to AMD and Intel graphics cards due to unresolved issues on systems with the proprietary NVIDIA driver and the free Noveau driver.
no longer supports Flash
Adobe Flash plug-in support has been removed. Support for Flash technology was officially discontinued by Adobe on the 31st. December 2020. In fact, the ability to use the Adobe Flash plugin was already disabled by default in Firefox 69, but there was an option to enable Flash for some websites.
Flash was the last NPAPI plugin supported by Firefox. Support for other NPAPI plugins such as Silverlight, Java, and multimedia codecs has been removed in Firefox 52, which will be released in 2016.
Certain other modifications
In addition to the changes and improvements, 33 vulnerabilities are fixed, of which 25 are dangerous. 23 vulnerabilities (compiled for CVE-2021-23964 and CVE-2021-23965) were caused by memory issues, e.g., B. by buffer overflow and access to already released memory. These problems can cause an attacker to execute code when a malicious website is opened.
