After Paul Pogba was booed off at Old Trafford, Ralf Rangnick stated it “n’t make sense” for Manchester United supporters to criticize him.

Supporters applauded Rangnick’s decision to bring on Pogba in the second half of Saturday’s 3-2 triumph against Norwich with applause before turning to boos as he went off. “F—- off Pogba,” chanted the crowd.

At the final whistle, the 29-year-old received another nasty welcome as he seemed to cup his ear in the direction of the Stretford End.

When questioned about the crowd reaction to Pogba, Rangnick replied, “I didn’t hear it personally to be honest; we were talking about it with my staff in the locker room.”

“I really believe the fans here are incredible. Today’s crowd in the stadium was incredible; it could not have been any better.

“I understand if the fans are unhappy and irritated; we are as well. I don’t believe it makes sense to go after and target a single person or player. It is a shared obligation. This makes no sense to me, which is why I will always defend and protect my guys.

“By the way, I thought Paul did a good job in the first half with the ball.”

Thousands of United supporters marched in protest of the club’s owners before of the match, before the players were attacked as Norwich battled back from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2, with cries of “you’re not fit to wear the jersey” echoing down the stands.

Rangnick was also questioned about the footage circulating on Social Media of Pogba, who is out of contract in the summer, cupping his ear as he went down the tunnel at full-time, at his post-match press conference.

He said, “I didn’t see it, I heard it.” “It was most likely his response to the supporters’ yelling. As I already said, I understand the fans and supporters in certain ways, but it does not make sense to take on individual players.”

“We are working hard to create the circumstances for fresh success on the field, while improving our interaction with supporters,” a United representative said in response to the pre-match fan protests.

“We appreciate supporters’ right to peacefully express their ideas, and we will continue to listen to them in order to work together to bring the club back to where we all want it: fighting for trophies.”

In terms of the game itself, United owe their close triumph to Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his 50th career hat-trick against bottom-placed Norwich.

Rangnick’s club is three points closer to the top four despite losses to Tottenham and Arsenal, but the interim coach is not optimistic about their prospects of qualifying for the Champions League next season, with visits to Liverpool and Arsenal coming up next week.

“Everyone saw today’s game, and we all know who we’re going to face on Tuesday,” Rangnick remarked.

“They may have a chance to take home four trophies.” It will be very tough to gain even a point out of this game if we continue to play like we did today; this is something we must be genuinely aware of.

“We must raise our own bar and set a higher standard for ourselves. We have to be realistic, and we have to play a lot better than we did tonight if Liverpool has the ball.”
