Deezer, Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Amazon Music: Our Music Streaming Comparison

Screenshot (123)

Spotify and Deezer didn’t arrive on the market in one day. But now, no matter what you think, streaming has become a way to consume music. Offers are constantly multiplying and trying to differentiate themselves. Here is our comparative guide to help you find your way around.

Update of comparisons with the arrival of Amazon Music on 15/11/2017.

If we could still define the horizon of music streaming by a confrontation between the Scandinavian Spotify and the French Deezer for the French market less than two years ago, today the market is metamorphosed and the arrival of Apple Music has strongly destabilized the players present. A step-by-step guide to finding one’s way around is essential.

In order to see more clearly, we must already start by talking about the adoption of streaming by the French, which offers a mixed record. While the use of services has been growing steadily since 2013, in 2015 only three out of ten French people will be using streaming. This is certainly a lot, but not enough to provide platforms and artists with the much needed stable model. Moreover, only 22% of French users have paid subscriptions on these platforms.

Are you going around in circles to choose the perfect offer for you? We’ll help you compare the different services. To distinguish between services, the number of titles available, interfaces, key functions, price and recommendation system will be considered.

Spotify green giant

The world’s number one platform is not only a pioneer in its own right. The company gradually shaped, after creating, the music streaming as we know it today.

No fears about the available securities: there are more than thirty million of them. Spotify objectively has almost everything you listen to. In France in particular. The quality is not as high as that of very high definition, but will you perceive it? The €9.99 offer will allow you to listen to as many tracks as you want without advertising, get your playlists, listen to your friends’ playlists (Spotify is very social) and the company’s playlists.

As for its editorial line, it can be described as rudimentary and correct without being bluffing. We note all the same that the service offers very good live and unpublished and even recently some videos. The editorial line is therefore quite complete without being at a level that allows us to discover the new unknown Pakistani group that will be walking in 10 years time. Too bad.
Spotify-Party-Overview

In terms of interfaces and user experience, the ease of use of the service has strongly influenced its success. It’s all clear, it’s all easy. Note that it is very difficult to find a platform on which the service does not work. Good point.

Deezer, the most French

Deezer is to French music, what Barbara is to French song: everything. Its French presence allows it to establish beautiful partnerships which have made the French reputation of the service.

The French service is on a par with its Swedish competitor, with more than 43 million titles available, so there’s little chance you won’t find what you’re looking for. The sound quality is at the usual standard, just like Spotify. Price and features are finally quite close between the two big names: €9.99 per month here too. Note that in July, Deezer launched a family formula for €14.99, following Apple’s example. With, in the same way, a very good development of social functions and playlists.

A real preference on our part for Deezer’s editorial line, which is very much oriented towards the French and European scene: you will discover new bands quite easily. In addition, many new releases appear on Deezer first. We also note the Deezer Sessions, live artists for the service: a real pleasure. The numerous partnerships with record companies, festivals, radio stations, etc. allow the service to keep up with the latest news for our curious ears.

Initially a bit behind on mobile, Deezer has caught up very well and it’s becoming difficult to distinguish between the Spotify and French interfaces. It’s pretty straightforward here, too. Same for the available mobile platforms: the applications are there.

Amazon Music, “Prime” discount

In the long list of Amazon services, we can add, after video streaming, audio streaming. Amazon recently launched its Amazon Music service in France. This offer already existed in the United States and is the result of an upgrade of the Seattle giant’s former music services.

Amazon’s solution will be of primary interest to subscribers to thePrime/Premiumservice from the e-commerce leader, as they will benefit from discounts on the platform’s rates if they choose a one-year subscription. The latter are thus offered an annual subscription for one person at €99, and afamilyversion at €149 per year.  Amazon Prime customers get their first 3 months free on both offers and 2 months free with the annual subscription (both offers can be combined).

On the side of the editorial line and other advantages of Amazon Music, is easy to use on Echo and with Alexa. Many automatic playlists exist, but they seem rather banal and do not offer relevant discoveries.

The catalogue contains 50 million titles and is not fundamentally different from competing discotheques. The applications are relatively easy to use despite some complexities. Finally, Amazon Music takes advantage of your purchases – vinyl, physical and digital – on its platform to build your library and also allows you to import your own titles from your computer.

Google Play Music, magic algorithms

Because Google wouldn’t be Google if it wasn’t trying to do everything that needs to be done, Mountain View has taken up music streaming. Even if Play Music is rather discreet and does not have as many users as the first two, it has real assets to show.

As for the number of titles, it’s still fairly homogeneous here with a total of around thirty million available: once again little cause for concern. The real plus of the platform is the upload functionality of your music library: once you have subscribed, you can stream your music and the titles available for streaming anywhere in the world without any difficulty. A possibility that changes the streaming model a little bit by putting some cloud in it and that proves to be essential for those who like old vinyls not reissued and not found among the 30 million titles.

The sound quality is pretty much the same as on Spotify/Deezer. The price too, €9.99, is in line with the competition. For the future, it should be noted that in the United States, a Play Music subscription entitles you to YouTube Red and vice versa. Concerning the system of recommendations proposed by Google, the bet made is that of algorithms, everywhere. Radio, automatic playlist, instant mix, the service offers at every moment possibilities to generate thematic waiting lists where your preferences are mixed. A real favorite for the simplicity and the relevance of the proposals, without forgetting the function ” Mix I’m lucky ” so Google and finally very useful. So it’s up to you: here no partnership, few humans behind the processing of the playlist offer, but an unusual and quite convincing proposal.

The user interface is not among the simplest, but you end up finding your way around and the tool is quite powerful thanks to its Material Design model, which is totally responsive on all types of screens. We will regret the total lack of social features.

Apple music, human song

Apple is thegame-changer of the sector: last come, first served. Within a few months, the service became the second largest in the world, and Spotify is still shaking. If Apple’s future depends so much on its future services, music streaming has not been harmed. Any reason to subscribe?

For its late entry into the market, Apple had prepared the ground so as not to leave any advantage to its competitors. The number of titles available joins the very classic average of 30,000,000, the price is also set at €9.99 (no free version with advertising is offered) with a little extra for family subscriptions at €14.99 which turns out to be the same price as its competitors. The audio quality is also in line with the other services. Homogenization seems to be the overriding rule to ensure a breakthrough.

The real differentiation comes from Apple’s editorial line, which is convincing and unseen on the market: where Google offers us all algorithms, Music offers almost everything human. Craftsmanship. Radio stations hosted by well-known presenters, playlists edited by music lovers, interesting and rare proposals, between the algorithm and the content produced by Apple and its team, your ears are cuddled and your curiosity is satisfied. A real plus for us.

apple-music-app-ios-9

You can quickly get the hang of all the Apple Music interfaces on OS X and iOS, but you’ll regret the Android and iTunes versions on Windows, which are not the best in terms of user experience on these platforms. Like Play Music, the lack of social function a-la-Spotify is noteworthy even though Apple Music offers community features to connect artists and fans.

Qobuz, the made in france

Same price and quality placement on the Hi-Fi as Tidal, without stars, but with an advantageous editorial line and a sincere concern for music and its diversity.

Qobuz is first known for its history as a small French SME in the assault of an ultra-competitive market. Its rates have recently been reframed, starting at €9.99 for the mobile, with an offer calledCD quality without Hi-Res, and going up to more than €200 per year for Hi-Fi subscriptions. Qobuz is expensive, but the quality is there, it’s undeniable.

Yet the French have a less complete catalogue than Spotify but still have over 40,000,000 tracks – with 1 million tracks in Hi-Fi quality. In the end, there are relatively few technical arguments outside of quality to defend the platform, with several exceptions: attention to metadata, musical diversity, and prolific editorial production. The real plus of Qobuz is reserved for music lovers who are looking for a real editorial line on these less popular musical genres, but on which Qobuz is very invested, for our greatest pleasure. Note that the Qobuz team also provides its subscribers with information on releases and a Qobuzissime label for their favorites, which is appreciable.

Despite recent updates, Qobuz’s interfaces are minimalist, a practical advice to amateurs. No real social integration here either.

Tidal, mr. carter family

Bought out by Jay-Z, Tidal has become the plaything of the rapper and the big names in U.S. pop. Premium-oriented, Hi-Fi and celebrity-approved, the service is not taking off, but it’s getting a lot of ink flowing. Behind the buzz, is there an interesting service?

Before being TIDAL-Z, Tidal was a Swedish hi-fi streaming service edited by Aspiro. Since the takeover, some things have been changed by the rapper-entrepreneur, but the high-definition catalogue has remained. The number of titles barely sticks to the competition, but the big advantage of the catalogue Mr. Carter inherited is of course the quantity of titles available in FLAC, a lossless format. Impressive if and only if you are over-equipped and demanding with your hearing.

Prices are higher than for non-Hi-Fi competitors: €19.99 for the HQ subscription – note that a €9.99 subscription is offered without the Hi-Fi-ready option. Beyond the quality, the involvement of celebrities close to Jay-Z allows us to find a lot of exclusive contents that make the headlines (ANTI by Rihanna andThe Life Of Pabloby Kanye West just this last month). As on Apple Music, there are few algorithms, but a lot of professionally crafted content and playlists. Beautiful content in itself, perhaps a little insufficient in number. On the other hand, many music videos are available for streaming often exclusively as well: notice to fans of U.S. stars.

tidalWindows10

Concerning the interfaces, they are quite nice and very (too) simple. All this in beautiful applications that offer the promised premium feeling. Simplicity obliges, few killer features and no social integration.

Soundcloud, streaming on the artist platform

With the French launch of its paid offer, Go, Soundcloud has become aalmost music streaming platform like any other. After being the artistic and sound playground of the web.

Before joining the already well-populated ranks of music streaming platforms, Soundcloud had been the preferred music cloud for artists and talent scouts since 2007. In just a few years, Soundcloud has become a reference for online music, and by 2013 it will have 250 million users. But in 2015, the majors are starting to turn against the European company which, in spite of itself, hosts content for which it does not own the rights.

On the brink of the financial abyss, Soundcloud empties its catalogue and starts negotiating with record companies. Negotiations that will lead to the arrival of a paid offer on Soundcloud, the Go formula, available in Go and Go+. With a rate of €9.99 per month, the Go+ offer seems very close to its competitors. The €5.99 Go package offers fewer tracks (120 million instead of 150 million) and excludes some tracks reserved for the Go+ offer. As far as audio quality is concerned, Soundcloud is not always a guarantee of quality, but tracks marked with the Go label are standard quality, à-la-Spotify.

On the other hand, the Soundcloud service stands out. With more than 175 million titles, the platform is at the top of the catalogue rankings. Be careful though, there are many titles, as the free offer and Soundcloud Go complement each other. So you will find a rather usual Go catalogue, but in addition, you will have access to all the titles on the platform.

Soundcloud does not seek to create exclusives, artists often already have an account on the site with many unreleased tracks and remixes available to users. On the other hand, the platform does not editorialize its content, but offers radio stations that have nothing to be ashamed of compared to those of Play Music and its social network operation – with followers and re-posting – will allow you to interact and discover music.

Screenshot (123)

However, while the Go offer is particularly interesting for Soundcloud users, newcomers will certainly be lost in the platform’s interface, which is unlike any other. Indeed, the Go offer does not change the Soundcloud interface in any way: once you subscribe to the offer you will only see the titles marked with a Go appear. On the other hand, the search for an album or an artist is, for the moment, much more chaotic than with the competitors.
