Conservatorships of people with mental illnesses vary greatly depending on the person’s needs and the state in which they live. In some states, conservatorship is reserved only for people with a serious mental illness, while in others, it may be used on anyone deemed incompetent by a judge.

In November, Bessemer Trust Co. was named co-curator of Spears’ estate with Jamie Spears.

In her statement, Spears asked for termination of custody, although her lawyers have not yet filed a motion to that effect with the court.
