The Asus ROG Phone 2 (ZS660KL) in brief

Presentation

The Asus ROG Phone 2 (or ROG Phone II) was presented at IFA 2019 in Berlin. With the serial number ZS660KL, this large hardcore gaming smartphone builds on the design, heat dissipation and gaming experience (with dedicated accessories and applications) of its predecessor, while benefiting from a renewed technical platform.

6.59-inch Full HD+ Screen

In terms of design, the ROG Phone 2 is very similar to its predecessor. The organisation of the technical elements is identical: two front loudspeakers housed in borders around the screen; double photo sensor at the rear, placed horizontally in the upper left corner; backlit Republic of Gamer logo at the rear; chassis made of Corning Gorilla 6 mineral glass and aluminium, partially pressure-sensitive side panels.

Note the disappearance of the fingerprint reader from the back of the device. This biometric sensor has been integrated in the front, under the touch panel. A slab 0.59 inches larger than its predecessor (to 6.59 inches), thanks to a thinner edge and a change in the display ratio (from 18/9e to 19.5/9e). The screen-to-surface ratio increases from 76% to about 80%.

The display of the ROG Phone 2 is AMOLED, like that of its predecessor. The definition remains Full HD+ (with slightly more pixels in height due to the change in ratio), for a resolution that changes very slightly from 402 pixels per inch to 391 pixels per inch. The refresh rate of the slab is 120 Hz, compared to 90 Hz previously. The refresh rate of the touch layer is 240 Hz for increased responsiveness. The panel displays 108% of the DCI-P3 color sample and is HDR compatible.

Snapdragon 855+ with 12GB RAM

This ASUS smartphone features Qualcomm’s latest high-end chipset, the Snapdragon 855+. This octo-core consists of one Kryo 485 Prime core clocked at 2.96 GHz, three Kryo 485 Gold cores clocked at 2.42 GHz and four Kryo 485 Silver cores clocked at 1.78 GHz. It integrates an Adreno 640 GPU.

The ROG Phone 2 is available in three versions. They all have 12 GB of RAM (4 GB more than the ROG Phone). The storage volume ranges from 256GB to 1TB and 512GB. This is the first time that Asus offers 1TB of storage in a smartphone. Like the ROG Phone, the ROG Phone 2 does not incorporate a memory card reader to expand this space. Note that only the two best are offered in France.

Dual 48+13 megapixel photo sensor

On the photo side, the ROG Phone 2 is inspired by its predecessor while improving the definition of the two main sensors. The 12-megapixel model of the ROG Phone becomes a 48-Megapixel sensor (Sony IMX586). It is always combined with an f/1.8 aperture lens and phase-detecting autofocus. It loses its optical stabilizer, but gains an additional laser autofocus for hybrid focusing.

The second sensor is a 13 megapixel model, replacing the 8 megapixel sensor of the ROG Phone. It is also placed here behind a wide-angle lens opening at f/2.4. A double LED flash accompanies the set. The ROG Phone 2 shoots at 2160p at up to 60 frames per second and rises to 480 frames per second at 720p in slow motion. The gyroscope is used to stabilize video shots (but cannot be activated in slow motion).

The front camera is also enhanced in terms of definition. The ROG Phone’s 8-megapixel sensor is replaced by a 24-megapixel sensor. The aperture of its lens changes from f/2.0 to f/2.2. It shoots in 1080p at 30 frames per second. It is HDR compatible.

Battery 6000 mAh with fast charge and reverse charge

The ROG Phone 2’s battery offers one of the largest capacities on the high-end smartphone market: 6000 mAh. That’s 50% more than the battery of the first ROG Phone. It is still fast charge compatible and accepts, as before, chargers with a maximum power of 30 watts. The ROG Phone 2, unlike its predecessor, can also charge other devices. The emitted charging power is 10 watts.

The smartphone is animated by Android 9.0 Pie with an overlay called ROG UI. The rest of the equipment of the ROG Phone 2 is the same as its predecessor. It integrates a LTE modem (category 18), WiFi ad (also called WiFi 6) and Bluetooth 5.0, a GPS sensor (Galileo, Beidou, QZSS and Glonass), two nano SIM slots, an NFC sensor, two speakers (already mentioned above), a hi-fi audio chipset (DTS compatible for headphones) and a USB Type C 3.1 port.

Increasingly rare in the high-end segment, the ROG Phone 2 (like its predecessor) retains the 3.5 mm jack port for connecting headphones. An FM tuner accompanies this connection. Finally, an extension port specific to the ROG Phone range, for connecting accessories, is accessible on the left side.

The Asus ROG Phone 2 is available in two colors: matte black or glossy black.
