Apple has released a new computer chip, the M1 Ultra. This is an 8-core processor that can run up to 4.5GHz and comes with 16GB of RAM for $4199 USD – not exactly cheap but it does have some premium features like Radeon Vega Graphics Processor IP64 certified for water cooling, HBM2 memory (High Bandwidth Memory 2), PCIe 3.0 x16 interface, etc
Apple has unveiled the M1 Ultra, a new chip that is “the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer.” The M1 Ultra is designed to be used in gaming laptops.

With Apple’s most recent announcement, the M1 Ultra, the desktop CPU divisions of AMD and Intel may as well pack it up or at the very least hang their heads in shame. The M1 Ultra, the latest in Apple’s line of potent in-house SoCs, boasts a mind-boggling count of 144 billion transistors (apparently the most ever in a personal computer chip), a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine. It is referred to as “the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer.” The Mac Studio, an entirely new high-performance PC with a stylish, compact casing that the firm also unveiled today at its keynote event for March 2022, contains Apple’s M1 Ultra.
“M1 Ultra is another another revolutionary piece of Apple Silicon that will rock the PC market. According to Johny Srouji, senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies at Apple, “we’re able to scale Apple silicon to unprecedented new heights by linking two M1 Max chips with our UltraFusion packaging design. “M1 Ultra completes the M1 series as the most powerful and competent processor for a personal computer in the world with its strong CPU, big GPU, amazing Neural Engine, ProRes hardware acceleration, and vast quantity of unified memory,” according to the manufacturer.

Apple introduces the M1 Ultra, the most powerful personal computer processor in the world (Apple)
- A 20-core CPU with 16 high-performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores is a standout feature of the M1 Ultra. In the same power envelope, it offers multi-threaded performance that is 90% faster than the fastest 16-core PC desktop CPU currently on the market. Additionally, M1 Ultra consumes 100 watts less to attain the PC chip’s top performance. Due to this incredible efficiency, fans operate silently and less energy is used even while software like Logic Pro handle a significant number of audio plug-ins, effects, and virtual instruments.
- M1 Ultra includes a 64-core GPU that is 8 times larger than M1 and is designed for the most graphics-intensive tasks, such as 3D rendering and complicated image processing. This GPU offers quicker performance than even the most powerful PC GPU while using 200 watts less power.
- With M1 Ultra, Apple’s unified memory architecture has also been scaled up. The M1 Ultra may be configured with 128GB of unified memory and has a memory bandwidth increase to 800GB/s, which is more than 10x the speed of the most recent PC desktop processor. Nothing compares to M1 Ultra for graphics memory to handle vast GPU-intensive tasks like working with extreme 3D geometry and rendering gigantic scenes, which max out at 48GB on the most powerful PC graphics cards.
- The M1 Ultra’s 32-core Neural Engine completes the most difficult machine learning tasks quickly, up to 22 trillion operations per second. Additionally, M1 Ultra provides ProRes video encode and decode performance that is twice as fast as M1 Max thanks to its enhanced media engine. No other processor can play back up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video, but the new Mac Studio with M1 Ultra can. 4 A display engine that can drive multiple external displays, built-in Thunderbolt 4 controllers, and best-in-class security features like Apple’s newest Secure Enclave, hardware-verified secure boot, and runtime anti-exploitation technologies are also integrated into M1 Ultra as custom Apple technologies.
