This year, Apple is reportedly planning several iPhone models at a reduced price, starting with a successor to the iPhone SE in March, but also a compact model in September.
The iPhone 11, released in 2019
Apple iPhone’s are expensive, that’s a fact. As an example, Apple’s top-of-the-line model can be priced at around €1659 for an iPhone 11 Pro Max in its 512GB version. Among the new iPhones presented by Apple last September, there is also the iPhone 11, which sells for as little as 809 euros. A much more affordable price, certainly, but still very high-end. The most affordable models sold by Apple are actually older iPhone models, such as the 2018 iPhone XR, still in the catalog and sold from 709 euros, or the 2017 iPhone 8, priced at 539 euros. And below 539 euros… nothing. Apple had well imagined a more affordable model with the iPhone SE, released in 2016, but it’s no longer available in the manufacturer’s catalog, and it’s getting very seriously old in 2020.
In 2020, will Apple finally think about small purses? At least that’s what seems to be in the works, according to the many rumors that are coming in about a possible iPhone SE 2, scheduled for the beginning of this year. These rumors are further reinforced by this information from Bloomberg, which now claims that this “low-cost” iPhone would go into production as early as February, for release in March 2020. According to the latest rumors about it, the iPhone SE 2 would strongly resemble the iPhone 8, with a 4.7-inch LCD panel surrounded by wide borders, and it would be equipped with a Home/Touch ID button. On the back, however, he could opt for the frosted glass of the iPhone 11 Pro. It’s inside the smartphone, however, where things get more interesting, since this iPhone SE 2 could be carrying an Apple A13 SoC, the same content in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro. If Apple was planning to launch this model at the same price as the first iPhone SE of the name ($399 in the US, €489 in France), it would certainly make it a must, since it would be the most powerful smartphone available at such a price with the A13 chip, and running under iOS.
Several other affordable models could follow the return of this affordable phone. While rumours are still pretty murky about September’s iPhone vintage, Ming-Chi Kuo, the Apple expert analyst, saw no less than four new models in his crystal ball, all equipped with OLED screens. In the high-end segment, there would be 6.1 and 6.7-inch models, with triple camera, and 5.4 and 6.1-inch models to succeed the iPhone 11 with two photo sensors. This 5.4-inch model could, above all, be sold cheaper than the current iPhone 11, and thus offer an opportunity for smaller purses to get an iPhone that combines all the latest technologies of the Apple, and especially an edge-to-edge screen with the Face ID facial recognition system. While it should prove more affordable than other models, the 5.4-inch iPhone could also follow in the footsteps of the first iPhone SE with its compact size, a segment that has been so neglected by manufacturers, but which nevertheless has its followers.
