People watch streaming TV as frequently on their smartphone or Android tablet as they do on their TV. The advantage is that you don’t necessarily have to be in your living room for this and you can be quietly isolated with a headset and your smartphone to watch a movie or a series. However, the correct application and connection must be available!
Here is our small selection of applications to watch TV on your Android smartphone, we take stock of the best solutions that are present on the Play Store. Whether it is the solutions of third party publishers or those of operators, the choice is vast on Google’s application shop, we discover the possibilities.
The big advantage of the official DTT channel applications is that they not only offer you a live stream on your smartphone of the programs broadcast, but also various services, including replay and a TV guide. You’ll never miss another episode of Life’s So Sweet! Joking aside, most of the DTT channels have their own app and you can find them in the Play Store.
Note that some apps include several channels such as France.TV, which includes programs from France 2, France 3 (with all local dropouts), France 4 or France Ô or France 5 and the official 6Play apps from the M6 group and MyTF1. The advantage is that you don’t have to install dozens of applications. Here are the main ones, the ones you absolutely must have:
- MyTF1 (TF1, TMC, NT1, HD1)
- France.TV(France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, France Ô, Franceinfo)
- 6Play (M6, W9, 6ter)
- NRJ 12
- BFM TV
In addition to the official applications of the TV channels, it is also possible to rely on your operator’s application, which in most cases will already be installed on your smartphone. Please note, however, that with some operators, this option is subject to a charge. As always, there is live, replay and sometimes even VOD.
Most of the time, the channels are accessible in 3G / 4G as well as in Wifi but pay attention to your data package. The quality of the stream will depend, again, on the quality of your internet connection.
Note that on the Free side, only ISP customers are entitled to a TV application called Box’n TV. Free Mobile customers who have a fixed Internet offer from another ISP are not entitled to access the operator’s channels. They will have to rely either on the official applications of the channels listed above or on the Molotov service, which you will discuss in the next paragraph.
- SFR TV
- Orange TV
- B.tv (Bouygues Telecom)
- Box’n TV (Free)
Rather well designed, MyCanal offers you the six Canal+ channels in streaming but also includes all the DTT channels, like the operator applications. It also offers a video-on-demand service as well as the “To be reviewed” function that allows you to go back up to 8 hours before a Canal+ channel programme is broadcast in case you missed a programme or simply the beginning of a film. Finally, the app also offers a remote control function to control your HD Wifi CHANNEL decoder and your Freebox.
Available for all Android devices and Android TV since November, Molotov is still the best solution. The application developed by Pierre Lescure, one of the founders of Allociné, aims to totally reinvent the way we watch TV by highlighting content rather than TV channels. Direct and replay are mixed indiscriminately and the application offers no less than 36 free channels. The 26 TV channels are now available, plus M6 Boutique, Luxury and BFM Business.
Note that all the channels offered can be watched in HD if your connection allows it and if of course the original stream is offered in this format. The application also offers paid options such as Ciné+ at 9.99 euros per month, 100 hours of recording for 3.99 euros per month and the Extended option which for 9.99 euros per month offers more than 70 channels including AB1, Paris Première, Teva or TCM Cinema. The ultimate application for televisions!
