After being swept by the Boston Celtics in the 2022 playoffs, it’s time to take a look back at Kevin Durant’s career to see why he may be one of the most overprotected and overrated talents in NBA history.

Kevin Durant is without a doubt a baller. He has a career 27.2 PPG on 49.6 percent FG, 38.4 percent 3-PT FG, and 88.4 percent FT, making him one of the most skilled scorers of all time. These shooting splits are outstanding and show that the player is a natural scorer. There is no doubting that KD is one of the best scorers of all time.
What may be debated, though, is Durant’s overall performance. Durant has been chastised throughout his career for not exerting himself when he needed to. That might be a sign of a selfless player who just wants to play basketball the right way, but it could also be a symptom of mental weakness. Durant has a propensity to fade away when his scoring drys up during a game.
Countless superstars have struggled with their shoots but yet managed to assist their teams win games. Durant later found himself in a situation where he lost control of his teammates, even while playing on a championship team with great talent in golden state On the floor, Draymond Green tore Durant to tears, effectively conceding that the team didn’t need KD to win titles. Would a teammate like that trash Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant? That’s better left as a rhetorical inquiry.

Even though KD deserves credit for helping Golden State to the Finals, his titles should not be used to prove that Durant is a top-15 player of all time.

Kevin Durant earned the MVP title in 2014, averaging 32.0 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game, 5.5 assists per game, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 50.3 percent from the field, 39.1 percent from 3-point range, and 87.3 percent from the free throw line. KD was likely his greatest season on an individual level since he was displaying his exceptional shot-making abilities, which rendered him unstoppable.

However, when it comes to Kevin Durant, this series has opened a lot of eyes, especially given the criticism he has received throughout his career. There’s no denying that KD looked terrified, perplexed, and out of his depth against the Celtics this season.
Durant’s stats dropped dramatically after averaging 29.9 points per game on 51.8 percent shooting from the field and 38.3 percent from three in the regular season. Durant shot 38.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range against the Celtics. KD was inefficient for a guy who has to score to be productive, which is why the Nets had no chance in the series.
Most significantly, his presence was noticeably absent. Simply glancing at the figures won’t tell the whole picture, since his 26.3 PPG average in the first round might be misleading. Durant, on the other hand, acted afraid and perplexed. While his head coach Steve Nash is to blame, and the Boston Celtics have shown their value as the league’s greatest defensive squad, KD must improve. In Game 1, KD shot 1-5 from three-point range and scored 23 points while committing six turnovers in 41 minutes of action. That was a bad way to start a series because it set the tone for him and his squad the rest of the way.
Durant scored 27 points in the next game, but shot a dismal 23.5 percent from the field and had 6 turnovers once again. Durant could have had the worst game in recent memory if it weren’t for his 20 free throw attempts. Of course, his performance in Game 3 was absolutely inexcusable. In 46 minutes, the superstar forward scored 16 points on 11 shots while also committing five turnovers.
The guy, who was renowned for being a long-range sniper and a good scorer, scarcely took any shots throughout the game and showed little desire to go out and shoot. KD, on the other hand, seemed perplexed and uncertain of himself. That is unheard of for a 33-year-old with 13 years of experience. Durant laid the greatest egg of his career rather than giving his team life. Even though Durant scored 39 points in Game 4, he set the tone for his team in the previous three games, nearly guaranteeing a first-round elimination by the time Game 4 arrived.
Of course, the Nets’ effort in Game 4 was insufficient, as they lost the game and were swept by the Celtics. For a guy who was once compared to Giannis Antetokounmpo as the greatest player in the world, this was a series that may be the west point in his career. Overall, this first-round series opened many people’s eyes to KD, as it may have confirmed the criticism that the forward’s game and mindset aren’t all that they’re cracked up to be.
Kevin Durant is a fantastic scorer, but he has never shown that he is a natural leader, a dominating all-around player, or the greatest player in the world at any one time. With championship rings that come at the expense of joining a championship team that didn’t need him, it’s difficult to dispute that Kevin Durant is one of the NBA’s most overrated players.
